Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets gave coach Byron Scott a rare combination of solid defense and balanced scoring. P.J. Brown and rookie J.R. Smith scored 14 points apiece and led six players in double figures to help the Hornets post a 92-85 victory over the Utah Jazz. In recording just their 13th win in 58 games this season, the Hornets ended Utah's three-game winning streak and defeated the Jazz for the 10th time in 12 home contests. "I think we're a lot better than we were three weeks ago," Scott said. "We're getting a lot more acclimated offensively and defensively." Utah led by two points after the first period, but New Orleans held the Jazz to 12 points on 16 percent (3-of-19) shooting from the floor in the second quarter to take a 47-42 halftime lead. "They had 30 points in the first quarter," Brown said. "And I just told the guys that was too many points for them to score on our home floor. In the second quarter, we got our intensity level up and we just kept a hand in their faces and kept them off the glass." Brown and Smith combined to score nine of the team's first 13 points of the third quarter and Utah did not score a basket in the final 5:24 of the period as New Orleans extended the lead to 70-60. "We did a poor job setting our men up," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We did a poor job of screening guys. But I think a lot of that has to do with they were tougher than we were. They just waxed us out on the floor and then when that happened, we didn't want to play inside." Trailing, 82-69, with 5:22 left, Utah began to chip away and cut the lead to 85-80 when Andrei Kirilenko scored off a missed layup by Kirk Snyder with 2:27 remaining. But the Jazz got no closer. "We didn't play good defense and we let New Orleans take a lot of layups," Kirilenko said. "I'm going to give them credit and they play like a real team." Kirilenko scored 21 points and Raja Bell added 15 of his 19 in the first half for the Jazz, who shot 34 percent (28-of-83). Rookie Jackson Vroman scored a season-high 12 points for New Orleans and Chris Andersen came off the bench to add 12 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. "The main objective was to try to stop them defensively so we could run," Andersen said. "We executed our offense and we got the shots we wanted." The Hornets outscored the Jazz in the paint, 46-30, and recorded 14 fast-break points while Utah managed just two.
