Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers were hoping for a positive start under Kevin Pritchard. Fred Jones did not allow it to happen. Jones, who collected 23 points and eight assists, had a go-ahead 3-pointer, a steal and two free throws in the final two minutes to help the Indiana Pacers post a 106-97 triumph over the Trail Blazers. "This is a morale boost," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "I had a hunch about starting Freddy at the point guard. I like the way he's been playing and it opens the door for some possibilities out on the floor." Jones, a Portland native and University of Oregon alum, celebrated earlier in the day by having his high school number retired. "It was a great day all around," Jones said. "To get my school jersey retired earlier, being able to be with family and friends, and then get the win. It feels good to come home." Pritchard, Portland's director of player personnel, was named the team's interim coach after the Trail Blazers fired Maurice Cheeks - who had coached the team for 3 1/2 seasons - on Wednesday following a 2-7 stretch. "I'm really proud of the way the guys came out," Pritchard said. "They really played hard. The good things were that we pushed the ball. You are going to see more of that in games to come." The game was tied, 85-85, before the Pacers went on an 8-0 run, which Jones capped with a three-point play with 5:15 remaining. Portland countered with a 12-4 burst, tying the contest on a 3-pointer by Shareef Abdur-Rahim with 2:04 to play. But Jones answered with a 3-pointer with 1:36 left that gave Indiana the lead for good, 100-97, and Stephen Jackson pushed the lead to five points with a jumper with 59 seconds remaining. Following a timeout by Portland, Jones stole a pass by Damon Stoudamire, was fouled and sank a pair from the line for a 104-97 lead with 42 seconds to go. "Freddy was huge there at the end," Carlisle said. "For him to have the kind of game that he had is really great for him because he's worked hard and he's a great kid." "Damon was all over me," said Jones of the go-ahead 3-pointer. "That's one of those shots that we'll talk about when I get home in the summer. He'll say that it was luck and I'll say it was skill." Reggie Miller iced the game with two free throws with 30 seconds left. Miller and Jackson scored 24 points apiece for Indiana, which placed All-Star forward Jermaine O'Neal - a former Blazer - on the injured list before the game. O'Neal suffered a sprained right shoulder in a 96-87 setback to Denver on Thursday. Abdur-Rahim contributed 27 points and Darius Miles added 26 for the Trail Blazers, who were without injured regulars Zach Randolph and Nick Van Exel. Miles, whose spotty play and mental funk landed him in Cheeks' doghouse, played with a renewed energy under Pritchard, getting the start and connecting on 11 of his first 12 shots. He finished 13-of-17 from the floor. "I'm just glad we gave a nice little effort there at the end," Miles said. "Things have been sad and down around here because Cheeks left. It felt good to get out there and take some frustration out on the other team. I look at this like I'm starting over again." After 10 ties and 22 lead changes, Portland ended the first half by scoring the final six points. A dunk by Joel Pryzbilla with 1.9 seconds remaining gave the Blazers a 54-48 lead at break. The advantage reached nine points, 58-49, early in the third before the Pacers went on a 24-11 run. Anthony Johnson's two free throws with 3:22 left capped the burst and gave Indiana a 73-69 edge. Miller and Jackson combined for 17 points in that span.
