Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- With their offense struggling, the Milwaukee Bucks turned to their defense to rally for a win. Desmond Mason scored 20 points and the Bucks showcased a strong defensive effort down the stretch to post a 95-87 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Milwaukee dominated the third quarter to take a 70-63 lead into the final 12 minutes. A surge by the Bulls turned things around and a free throw by Othella Harrington gave Chicago an 80-75 edge with 4:33 left. The Bucks then put the clamps on, holding the Bulls without a point until Tyson Chandler's follow shot with 36 seconds left. During the drought, Chicago missed nine consecutive shots and saw Milwaukee score 13 straight points, taking an 88-80 lead before Chandler's basket. "I think down the stretch we started making shots that we were missing earlier in the game," Mason said. "We got more aggressive on defense and really stepped it up." "This was a very rewarding win. Games with Chicago have always been down to the wire," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "Tonight, we got some turnovers and made some baskets off of our defense that really ignited us." The Bucks made their last 12 free throws - four each by Mason and Maurice Williams - to seal the victory, improving to 6-0 at home against Central Division opponents. "The free throws were really the key to the victory for us, but we ultimately just didn't want to lose to the Bulls," said Bucks guard Michael Redd, who was held to 16 points on 7-of-24 shooting. Milwaukee finished with 13 steals, helping to offset 16 turnovers and a 35-of-86 (41 percent) shooting effort. "They had 38 points off of turnovers and offensive rebounds. It's tough to win when you do that," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. Kirk Hinrich scored 24 points and rookie Ben Gordon added 20 for the Bulls, who lost their third straight game after a 6-1 stretch. "It was really hard to get into the lane, so we had to settle for some outside shots that just didn't fall," Gordon said. "You just have to credit their defense, they made plays down the stretch." Chicago center Eddy Curry scored eight points and pulled down five boards in the first half to help the Bulls head into the locker room with a 44-41 lead. He played less than two minutes in the second half, however, getting benched by Skiles after committing his fourth turnover. "He was very slow to react to the activity around the basket and we were just choosing to go in a different direction," Skiles said after insisting Curry was not hurt and benched solely for his performance. The Bulls' leading scorer entering the game, Curry has seen his role diminished of late, averaging just 21.7 minutes over his last seven games. He admitted to reporters he may have a shorter leash than other players on the team. "Definitely, but I try not to think that way," Curry said. "You start to question a lot of things when you're in my position. I don't want to cause any controversy, but I just hope we can get this (situation) turned around before it gets too bad. "I definitely felt like I deserved an opportunity to get back in the game. I feel like a player should be allowed to make more than one mistake."
