Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs found a way to win without Tim Duncan. Ginobili scored 31 points, including six clutch free throws in the final minute, as the Spurs posted a 101-94 victory over the Utah Jazz. San Antonio played most of the second half without Duncan, a two-time MVP who left the game four minutes into the third quarter with a sprained right ankle. He immediately grabbed his ankle after landing on teammate Rasho Nesterovic's foot and did not return. "We'll find out more tomorrow," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I wouldn't expect him to be playing (Tuesday vs. New Jersey)." "We played more agressively after that," said Spurs guard Tony Parker, who scored 14 points. "Everybody did a good job replacing him. We're not worried at all. We know he'll be back. We just have to win." Ginobili scored 23 points through the first three quarters as the Spurs took a 73-72 lead into the final period. Rookie Beno Udrih scored six of his 11 points in a 10-2 spurt that pushed San Antonio's advantage to 83-74 with 9:26 left. "We did a good job," Ginobili said. "We're not used to playing without Tim. It was a big effort." Andrei Kirilenko had five points and an assist as the Jazz responded with a 9-3 run to draw within 86-83 with 5:35 to go before Ginobili hit a pair of free throws and added one of his seven assists on Robert Horry's dunk one minute later. Utah made one final push, cutting the deficit to 93-91 on two free throws by Raja Bell with just over a minute remaining. It had a chance to draw even, but Horry stole a pass from Mehmet Okur with 39 seconds left. "We still got back in the ballgame," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "When you watch (the Spurs), they play like they want the ball. They move to get open. We were too casual with the ball and turned the ball over at the end because of that." Ginobili and Parker combined to hit 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. "He's been in a lot of big games in both the NBA and overseas," Popovich said of Ginobili. "He doesn't feel pressure, he relishes it." Ginobili made 14-of-15 from the line as the Spurs - who rank 25th in the league in free throw shooting - shot 91 percent (29-of-32) from the stripe. "That's a gross anomaly for the San Antonio Spurs," Popovich joked. "We may move from 30th to 29th in the league in free-throw shooting with that performance, but I'm not sure we have enough time left in the season." Keith McLeod scored 18 points and Bell added 17 for the Jazz, who took advantage of Duncan's absence to outrebound the Spurs, 42-32. Duncan scored all 12 of his points in the first half, but Utah closed the second quarter with a 10-2 run to pull within 54-50 at the break. Bell added the first five points of the second half to give the Jazz a 55-54 lead with 10:41 on the clock before Ginobili converted a rare four-point play on the other end to put the Spurs ahead for good.
