Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette had one of the best games of his career but failed to make the one shot that mattered most for the Los Angeles Clippers. Maggette scored 37 points - one shy of his career high - but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Clippers dropped a 105-102 decision to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies appeared to take control when they bridged the third and fourth periods with a 12-2 run, capped by Earl Watson's layup that put Memphis ahead, 85-71, with just over 10 minutes left. "You knew they were going to get a run going," said Grizzlies forward Mike Miller, who scored six of his 17 points during the spurt. "Bottom line is we ended up holding on a getting the win. And anytime you can make a run on the road like we did late in the third quarter, it's big." Memphis still held a seemingly comfortable 102-89 advantage after Shane Battier's short jumper with 2:16 remaining. But Elton Brand and Rick Brunson hit consecutive buckets for Los Angeles before Maggette nailed a 3-pointer with a minute to go to draw the Clippers within 102-96. "Our mentality changed, we didn't defend the same way," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. "We didn't want to put them on the foul line, so we became passive defensively and, as a result, offensively we made some big mistakes. Brand, who finished with 17 points, made two more layups to cut the deficit to two points with 13 seconds to play. James Posey hit a pair of free throws on the other end and Quinton Ross responded with a follow shot to make it 104-102 with seven seconds on the clock. "Posey made his only two free throws of the night and they were huge ones," Fratello said. "Right now we are in the mold to try and hold on and give ourselves a chance for the playoffs." Los Angeles immediately fouled Brian Cardinal, who made 1-of-2 free throws to give Los Angeles a chance. "A sense of urgency set in when we were down," Brand said. "If we could have played the way we did at the end the whole game, they would have had a tough time scoring on us. Our sense of urgency has to come much sooner." Brunson missed a shot from the arc, but Brand got the offensive rebound and got the ball to Maggette, whose 3-pointer bounced off the front of the rim. It was Maggette's only miss in three shots from the arc. "We tried to get the first good look we could out of it," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We just didn't get it done." A frustrated Maggette left before speaking with reporters, but Fratello was impressed by the play of the Clippers' leading scorer. "Maggette was sensational with 23 points in the first half," Fratello said. Miller was hit in the face while attempting to defend Maggette's potential game-tying shot. He stayed on the floor for a few minutes before leaving the court under his own power. "I got hit in the nose by Posey," Miller said. "I had six stitches. They had to restructure the cartilage inside my nose. I'll be all right." Lorenzen Wright scored 23 points and Cardinal added 20 for the Grizzlies, who extended their winning streak to four games. Memphis, which was without injured forwards Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift, had all five starters score in double figures. "This is the way we've won a majority of our games," Battier said. "It hasn't been pretty. It's been a rag-tag assortment of players at times but we've found a way to win 34 games." Bobby Simmons scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half to help Los Angeles take a 50-45 lead at the break. "I wish that the game wouldn't have come down to the last shot for the win," Simmons said. "We made a few mistakes in the game plan, though, and it is up to all of us to execute."
