Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker should be ecstatic that he is no longer a member of the Atlanta Hawks. Walker came up with a pair of huge defensive plays in the final minutes as the Boston Celtics struggled to a 95-91 victory over the Hawks, who lost their 23rd straight road game. In a surprising trade deadline deal, the Celtics re-acquired Walker from the hapless Hawks for Gary Payton, center Michael Stewart, forward Tom Gugliotta and a first-round pick. Celtics vice president Danny Ainge never had been enamored with Walker and traded him to Dallas following the 2002-03 season. But now away from the NBA's worst team and having landed on a club leading the Atlantic Division, Walker took advantage of his former team down the stretch. Walker had a block of Al Harrington with under 1:40 remaining and Paul Pierce, who had a big fourth quarter, split a pair of free throws less than a minute later to give the Celtics an 88-87 lead. With the Celtics still clinging to the lead, Walker stripped the ball from Harrington at the top of the key and fed Ricky Davis for a layup for a 90-87 lead with 30 seconds left. "I feel for them," Walker said of his former teammates. "That's been the story of their season. They play so hard for 42-43 minutes and for some reason, you're not able to pull it out. I've been there plenty of times." For much of the night, Pierce drew the assignment of guarding Harrington. But down the stretch, Walker suggested he guard his former teammate. "I knew every play they were going to run," Walker said. "It's simple - Al Harrington. I knew from playing against him some of his characteristics and I just wanted the challenge of guarding him." Harrington saw it otherwise. "He grabbed my waist," he said. "That's why I fell. I bobbled the ball when I first got it and when I took the dribble he caught my waist." Atlanta's Tyronn Lue made a layup three seconds later. After a pair of free throws by Pierce reclaimed the Boston's three-point lead, Harrington hit deep shot from the left corner with 12 seconds left. Pierce added two more free throws, giving the Hawks one last chance for a tie with five seconds remaining but Gugliotta, part of the Walker trade, missed a 3-pointer. Pierce split two free throws with 3.7 seconds left to seal the win for the Celtics, who did not take their first lead until the 3:55 mark of the fourth quarter. Pierce scored 17 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and Davis added 21 off the bench for Boston, which improved to 5-1 since the Walker trade. "We did what we had to do to get the win," Pierce said. "Someway, somehow we're going to have to pull games out like this." Lue scored 25 points and Harrington added 21 and 13 rebounds for the Hawks, whose overall losing streak reached 13 games. Atlanta, which became the first team to lose 50 games, has not won the road since an 88-72 victory at NBA champion Detroit on December 10. "I just think that we don't know how to win down the stretch," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "Somebody's got to step up and make some plays." In addition to his defense, Walker also was solid offensively. He scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added nine rebounds. Payton, who never reported and was waived by the Hawks before re-signing with the Celtics, missed all five of his shots from the floor and scored two points in 33 minutes. Rookie Josh Childress scored 14 points and Obinna Ekezie had 10 and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who held a 70-64 lead entering the fourth quarter. Atlanta led by as many 12 points in the first half.
