Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki gave the Dallas Mavericks the lead. Darrell Armstrong made sure they kept it. Nowitzki's driving three-point play with 2:19 left put Dallas ahead to stay and Armstrong harassed Michael Redd into a miss in the waning seconds as the Mavericks held on for a 112-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. "I am really proud of how our guys played tonight, they really fought hard and had terrific effort tonight," Mavericks interim coach Avery Johnson said. "Dirk was just Dirk tonight, and we put the old man (Armstrong) in there and he came through for us." In a seesaw affair, Dallas won for just the second time in six games overall and the second time in its last 14 visits to the Bradley Center. It was a one-possession game for the final 10 minutes, which featured two ties and four lead changes. A layup by Redd, who scored 33 points, gave the Bucks their last lead at 104-102 with 2:42 to play. On the next possession, Nowitzki made a driving layup and was fouled. His free throw made it 105-104 with 2:19 to go. "It was huge to have our MVP (Nowitzki) back on the floor, causing mismatches, and giving us a big lift when we needed it," teammate Jason Terry said. Redd answered a jumper by Terry and a follow shot by Marquis Daniels with two free throws and a jumper, respectively. But after Michael Finley missed an open shot, Redd missed a fadeaway jumper with 20 seconds remaining. "I got the look I wanted in the final minute and we did what we wanted to do, but, at this point in the season a loss is a loss," Redd said. Nowitzki, who had 29 points and nine rebounds, sank two free throws before Desmond Mason responded with a layup with 16 seconds to play. Terry split a pair of foul shots, leaving the door open for the Bucks. Inserted for his defense, the 6-1 Armstrong matched up with the 6-6 Redd, who backed him into the lane but was bumped by Armstrong and missed a 14-footer. The rebound was batted around as time expired. "Darrell Armstong, you have to give him credit - 45 years old and cold off the bench," Terry quipped. "He knew what he had to do to help the team and he came through." The 36-year-old Armstrong played just two minutes. Terry scored a season-high 28 points, Finley added 19 and Daniels 13 for the Mavericks, who swept the season series for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign. Mason scored 20 points and Joe Smith added 19 for the Bucks, who have lost four of six. "Our inability to execute things down the stretch cost us the game," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "The little things, the intangibles, and that is disappointing because we talked about it and just didn't get it done." A jumper by Maurice Williams, who had 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, gave Milwaukee a 99-98 lead with 4:04 to go. Nowitzki tied it with a free throw, but Smith turned an offensive rebound into a three-point play and a 102-99 advantage with 3:42 left. Fifteen seconds later, Finley tied it with a 3-pointer. "Just his size (Nowitzki) and the way he shoots the ball," Smith said. "We did whatever we could to try to change up defensive schemes to slow those guys down, but in the end we weren't able to make the stops we needed."
