Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- A pair of All-Stars helped the Houston Rockets hand the Phoenix Suns their worst home loss of the season. Tracy McGrady scored 38 points and Yao Ming added 27 and a career-high 22 rebounds as the Rockets halted the Suns' four-game winning streak with a 127-107 rout. Phoenix's largest loss at America West Arena this season had been a nine-point setback to Memphis on January 19. It suffered a 21-point defeat at San Antonio on December 28. "This is a game we felt we should have won," said Suns forward Quentin Richardson, who had 11 points and nine rebounds. "We don't feel they are as good as we are, but they played like the better team tonight. You know the hungrier team is the team that plays the hardest." The Suns were without All-Star forward Shawn Marion, who was a late scratch due to a bruised left knee. "We didn't play a smart game," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We kept forcing the issue instead of playing basketball. We missed Shawn and his athleticism. We also missed the 10-15 rebounds he gets a night." With the game tied, 60-60, at the break, Phoenix opened the third quarter with a 21-7 run to take an 81-67 lead with 6:09 to go. Houston fought back to move ahead, 91-90, with 10:25 to go on a 3-pointer by Mike James. But the big push came less than two minutes later as the Rockets erased a 96-95 deficit with 14 consecutive points, including five by McGrady, who was 16-of-27 from the field. "Tracy McGrady did a good job of putting the dagger in when we were struggling," D'Antoni said. "He just didn't miss anything. He is just that type of player." The Rockets outscored the Suns in the final period, 41-17, shooting 57 percent (13-of-23). Phoenix was just 6-of-26 in the quarter. "For us to hold them to 17 points in the fourth quarter shows how good a defensive team we can be," McGrady said. "We did it with great intensity and had great poise when they made their run. I have to credit my big fella (Yao). I haven't seen that from him this year. (With) 27 points and 22 rebounds, he played with aggression." "We all did a much better job in the fourth quarter," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "They have advantages with quickness in (Amare) Stoudemire and we have advantages in size and strength. I thought Yao's size and strength were the telling difference." McGrady collected nine rebounds and David Wesley scored 20 points for surging Houston, which has won three straight and four of five. James added 14 points - including 10 in the final 12 minutes - for the Rockets, who are sixth in the Western Conference, two games behind Sacramento. "This is a game that looks like we are growing up and moving in the right direction," he said. "We are not really concerning ourselves with (playoff) positioning right now. We are concerning ourselves with our own personal style of play because we believe we have a chance of going very far this year." Stoudemire had 31 points and 10 boards and Walter McCarty scored a season-high 20 points for Phoenix, which had won the previous four meetings with Houston. While surpassing the 30-point plateau for the 23rd time this season, Stoudemire was just 1-of-6 in the fourth quarter. "We normally knock down shots and play hard the whole game," he said. "They went to the line a lot in the fourth and Tracy McGrady struck a match off that screen-and-roll."
