Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jason Terry and Marquis Daniels set the Minnesota Timberwolves further back in their battle for eighth place in the Western Conference. Terry scored 12 of his 22 points and Daniels 11 of his 16 in the fourth quarter to help the Dallas Mavericks beat the Timberwolves at the Target Center for a second time this season, 102-93. "Our team came out and played with desperation, and we have got to have that," said Mavericks assistant Avery Johnson, who once again was coaching in place of Don Nelson, who is with his wife as she recovers from surgery. Dirk Nowitzki added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have won back-to-back games after dropping five of seven. "Dirk showed leadership tonight both on the court and vocally," Terry said. "That is something we don't see very often, and it was good." Dallas trailed, 75-73, before Michael Finley nailed a jumper with 8:53 remaining to trigger an 11-2 run. Terry, who also had 12 assists, made a 3-pointer and layup during the run, which ended on a pair of free throws by Daniels that gave the Mavericks an 84-77 advantage with 6:22 to play. "Coming off the bench, you have to have energy and be ready at all times," Daniels said. "The guys were finding me in spots were I could get some easy baskets." "Marquis has been playing well," Johnson said. "I have been trying to figure out how to use him. We think we have found some things that work well." After Minnesota pulled within 93-89 on two free throws by Trenton Hassell with 1:23 left, Terry made a jumper and three-point play to put the game out of reach. "We had to continue to push it, continue a fast tempo and get stops," Terry said. "I needed to make sure we were the more aggressive team in the fourth quarter." Dallas had made just 8-of-16 free throws through three quarters but sank 12-of-13 in the fourth period. Minnesota connected on 24-of-31 overall but attempted only five in the final period, making four. "We had a couple possessions where we got a little confused on the pick-and-roll in the fourth quarter and that hurt us," said Minnesota forward Wally Szczerbiak, who scored 18 points off the bench. Kevin Garnett collected 24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for the Timberwolves, who entered the contest one game behind both the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver for the all-important eighth and final spot in the West. "We have 18 games left and we just have to keep playing hard, and hopefully some good things will happen," Timberwolves guard Anthony Carter said. With just under four minutes left in the first half, Garnett accidentally was poked in the left eye while grabbing a rebound. He missed two free throws and exited the contest shortly thereafter but returned for the second half. Neither team held a double-digit advantage in a game that had 16 ties and 12 lead changes. The road team has won each of the three meetings this season. The Timberwolves won in Dallas on November 12, 83-82, but lost here on December 7, 97-87. The teams play again Tuesday in Dallas.
