Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Larry Brown should be proud of Tayshaun Prince. Prince scored a career-high 31 points as the Pistons had to work overtime before posting a 114-108 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, who own the NBA's worst record. Earlier Monday, Brown - the Pistons' Hall of Fame coach - underwent a surgical procedure related to the hip surgery he had earlier in the season. It is uncertain when he will return to the team. Lately, Brown had been asking Prince, who is in his third season, to be more assertive on the offensive end. Prince, who scored just six points on 2-of-9 shooting in Sunday's 64-62 win over Utah, obliged his coach in this one. He made 13-of-19 shots, including a pair of big baskets in overtime, the second of which gave the Pistons a 110-104 lead with 1:27 left. "He asked for the ball down the stretch," said Gar Heard, who is coaching the team in Brown's absence. "He just took it to the hole, you have to give him credit. He's playing excellent basketball. "We've just been doing a good job sharing the basketball," Prince said. "The guys have been doing a good job getting me in a rhythm where I can make some shots." Chauncey Billups also came up big in the extra session for the Pistons, scoring half of their 14 points. After the Pistons collected two offensive rebounds, Billups drained a 3-pointer with 2:01 left to give Detroit a 108-104 edge. "They got three shots at it," Hawks guard Tyronn Lue said. "Chauncey hit a three. We gave it all we could. Everybody played hard defensively and took it into overtime, but weren't able to get a win." The Hawks were outrebounded 7-1 in overtime, including 4-0 on the offensive glass. "Their experience just took over," said Hawks forward Al Harrington, who scored a season-high 37 points, but fouled out with 1:44 remaining in overtime. "They just got it done." Rasheed Wallace scored a season-high 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who endured an embarrassing 88-72 home loss to the hapless Hawks earlier this season. "This is a strange team," Heard said. "They don't respect the Hawks like they do a team that is fighting for the playoffs. When they play a team that is kind of struggling along, they play with that team. We had to challenge them to step it up in the fourth quarter." Lue scored 27 points and dished 10 assists and Tom Gugliotta collected 14 points for Atlanta, which made 15-of-20 shots in the third quarter when it turned a nine-point deficit into a 77-72 lead entering the fourth period. "In the third quarter our starters started out kind of flat," Heard said. "We scored so easily in the first half that we thought it was going to be a shootout. They started making shots and we started missing." But the Pistons found their shot in the fourth quarter, using a 17-4 run to take an 89-81 lead. Detroit missed all 15 of its shots and scored six points in the fourth quarter Sunday. "We had to go out and find some type of rhythm," said Detroit center Ben Wallace, who collected two blocked shots to tie Terry Tyler's franchise record of 1,070. "In the fourth quarter, we got our rhythm back and were able to make things happen." Atlanta lost for the 15th time in 16 games.
