Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Larry Hughes, Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards got the better of the Los Angeles Lakers for 48 minutes. Unfortunately, they may be without All-Star forward Antawn Jamison for a lot longer. Hughes collected 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists and Arenas added 21 points as the Wizards routed the Lakers, 95-81, for just their fourth victory in 12 games. But the win might have been costly for the Wizards, who saw Jamison exit the contest late in the first quarter with right knee tendinitis. He did not return. "It is going to be a couple more days of rest and then a day-to-day evaluation from there," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said of Jamison, the team's third-leading scorer at 19.9 points per game. "He is trying to gut it out and when he feels he can give it another go, we will let him go." Jamison had played in an NBA-high 386 straight games before missing a loss to the New York Knicks last Tuesday due to tendinitis in his knee. He returned for the Wizards' loss at Boston on Sunday and scored 14 points. "When we talk about the proverbial step up, everyone has to step up and that is what happened tonight," Jordan said. "We have to carry it over to Wednesday (at Atlanta) and the rest of the season because we do not know how much Antawn will be involved." Washington, which swept the Lakers for the first time, led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter and held an 81-63 advantage after a jumper by Steve Blake with 9:44 remaining before Los Angeles scored eight straight points. But Arenas - who had scored just one point in the half - sank a pair of free throws with 6:22 to play, and after Lakers forward Caron Butler nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead 83-74, the All-Star guard sank a jumper and a 3-pointer for a 14-point cushion with 5:18 left. "We've been without players all season and that's just how it is," Arenas said. "The train doesn't stop and wait for everyone to get back on board. It keeps rolling and we have to keep rolling with it." Brendan Haywood scored 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting for the Wizards, who shot 44 percent (32-of-72) and limited the Lakers to 35 percent (31-of-88). "That is the way we have to play," Jordan said. "We were disruptive and we were active on defense. Larry and Jared (Jeffries) have really been leading our defense and it was good to have Kwame (Brown) in the post doing his thing. We executed well. It was a good all-around performance." Caron Butler contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who slipped into a tie with the Denver Nuggets for eighth place in the Western Conference. "We were beat in absolutely every category tonight, except I think we had more assists," Lakers coach Frank Hamblen said. "I was very disappointed in the way we came out and very disappointed in the way we continued to play. "There was an awful lot of smoke going on with all the fireworks before the game. It was very smoky to start that game, maybe we were a little foggy. I don't know. It was awful. I think the guys are probably embarrassed the way they played. I'm embarrassed the way I had them prepared." Kobe Bryant added 18 points but shot just 6-of-22 for Los Angeles, which had won four of its previous five games. "I was forced to take bail-out shots with the shot clock going down, taking fadeaways from the corner and things like that," Bryant said. "Not necessarily great looks, but we had to put the ball into the basket. They were tough shots. "We didn't do a good job of executing. They're a gambling team. They attack the ball. Against a team like that, you have to be space-conscious, execute and cut them up. We don't have enough experience in the offense to be able to make those adjustments."
