Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- LeBron James helped the Cleveland Cavaliers make quick work of the struggling Utah Jazz. James scored 26 of his 36 points in first half and the Cavaliers put away the game with a dominating second quarter en route to a 92-73 victory over the Jazz. Cleveland (34-27) pulled even with Washington for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The fourth-place team gets home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The much-anticipated return of Utah's Carlos Boozer to Gund Arena did not materialize. The former Cavalier, who jilted Cleveland's front office last summer when he signed a multi-year contract with the Jazz, has now missed 12 straight games with a sprained right foot and did not make the trip. "It was more than the (Carlos) Boozer thing," Cleveland forward Drew Gooden said. "We had energy right from the jump. We were focused." The Cavaliers led, 50-32, at the break thanks to a 13-0 run to start the second quarter. James punctuated the spurt with a 3-pointer to give Cleveland a 39-23 lead with 8:44 to play. "We just wore them down," Cavaliers point guard Jeff McInnis said. "We wanted to come out and jump on them and keep our crowd in the game." In the first half, James was 8-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-4 from the arc, and 8-of-12 from the line while nearly outscoring the Jazz by himself. "I don't think I've ever seen him make as many outside shots," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "His outside shot is coming around, so you better look out." When James sat down for the first time at the 6:34 mark of the second quarter, he had 25 points compared to Utah's 26. The All-Star added a highlight-reel one-handed jam off an alley-oop feed from McInnis that extended the lead to 70-45 with 1:20 to play in the third quarter. "I'm not forcing anything," James said. "It came in the flow. The way I felt tonight, I could have played 48 minutes." McInnis scored 12 points and Gooden added 10 and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have won three straight after a season-high six-game losing streak. Silas attributed the turnaround to solid defensive play. "That's going to be so important the next 21 games, for us to keep this kind of defensive intensity," Silas said. "That gives you a chance every night." "There's 20-some games left," James said. "It's important that I bring intensity and help carry our team." Utah was out of it early, shooting 27 percent (11-of-41) in the first half on the way to its sixth consecutive loss. "I'm glad (Silas) didn't play LeBron in the last quarter," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "They might have beaten us by 80 (points). They had us pushed out way out on the floor and they did a terrific job defensively." Andrei Kirilenko scored 14 points and Kris Humphries added 10 for the Jazz. "I think the key to the game was the second quarter when we lost, like, 15 to 20 points in a row," Kirilenko said.
