Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Carmelo Anthony was playing the perfect opponent to rebound from a pair of poor shooting games. Anthony scored 25 points to lead seven players in double figures as the Denver Nuggets cruised to a 120-101 rout of the reeling Charlotte Bobcats. In his last two games, Anthony struggled from the floor, making just 6-of-27 shots. He went 2-of-10 and was benched in the second half of Sunday's 106-101 loss to the Phoenix Suns, who are the NBA's highest-scoring team. Anthony had few problems against the defensively challenged Bobcats, who have allowed an average of 117 points in their last four games. The star forward made all four of his shots in the first quarter and was 6-of-7 before halftime as the Nuggets built a 62-47 lead. "I tried to get it going early," Anthony said. "I just went out there to play basketball and help my team win." "I thought Carmelo came out really into the game," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "He really got us going with some easy baskets. I just want him to learn to get half of his shots in the rhythm of the game and on his own. He's getting better at that." Andre Miller had 14 assists and Earl Boykins 11 for the Nuggets, who had an NBA season-high 40 assists on their 46 baskets. "The guys made their shots," Boykins said. "It wasn't anything different that Andre and I were doing." Led by Anthony's 10-of-16 shooting, Denver shot a season-high 54 percent (46-of-85) and held a 47-37 rebounding advantage. "Our point guards passed the ball fantastically," said Karl, who improved to 16-5 since taking over the team in late January. "It was the best tempo we've had. I think they're getting a good feel for attacking the defense and making the easy basketball play." Francisco Elson and DerMarr Johnson each added 14 points for Denver, which won for the ninth time in 10 games. The win also avenged last month's 94-88 loss at Charlotte. Keith Bogans scored 19 points and rookie Emeka Okafor added 17 for the expansion Bobcats, who lost their eighth straight game and joined Atlanta as a 50-loss team. "We're scoring a lot points but were not stopping anybody," Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We're basically conceding shots and guys are making them. Denver did exactly what they are supposed to do, they pushed the basketball and made shots" The Bobcats, who fell to 2-29 on the road, trailed by least 10 points and by as many as 28 in the second half. Denver, which improved to 12-1 against the Eastern Conference, moved one game in front of the Los Angeles Lakers for the final playoff spot in the more powerful West. "We're fortunate enough to be in this position with all of the changes and things that have been going on this year," Miller said. "There's some competitive teams right there so if we can stay competitive then anything can happen."
