Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace, Richard Hamilton and the Detroit Pistons displayed championship mettle down the stretch. Wallace and Hamilton keyed a late run as the Pistons edged the Seattle SuperSonics, 102-95, for their 10th straight home win. Chauncey Billups scored 32 points and Wallace added 24 - nine in the fourth quarter - and eight rebounds for the Pistons, who won for the fourth time in five contests following a three-game skid. Wallace stepped up his play after receiving a technical foul with 3:28 remaining in the second quarter. "The one thing I've learned is that technicals are the only things that seem to fire Rasheed up," said Pistons assistant Gar Heard, filling in once again for coach Larry Brown, who is recovering from surgery. "It worked a couple nights ago in Atlanta and it worked again today." "That's one thing that gets me going," Wallace said. "But we knew that we were playing a good team, and we knew we had to be aggressive. They just beat us out there, so we owed them one." The Pistons trailed, 90-87, before Wallace stole the ball from Antonio Daniels in the backcourt, sped toward the hoop and dunked with 2:23 remaining to trigger a 9-0 run. On Seattle's ensuing possession, Wallace jumped to steal a pass from Vladimir Radmanovic, then nailed a jumper on the other end to give Detroit a 91-90 edge with 1:59 to play. "I'm just playing," Wallace said. "All I do is take what the other team gives me." Wallace's heroics frustrated Seattle's Ray Allen. "We had the game under control and we just gave it away," said Allen, who scored 20 points. "You can't turn the ball over late in the game if you want to win." Hamilton nailed a 3-pointer from near the left corner with 1:12 left before Tayshaun Prince sank a pair of free throws for a 96-90 lead with 41 seconds remaining. "We had some problems with them off and on, but in the fourth quarter, when we needed to make the plays, we did a good job of defending and getting rebounds," Prince said. Rashard Lewis scored 10 of his 26 points in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter but was blanked down the stretch for the SuperSonics, who lost for the fifth time in seven games. "It was a total breakdown," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We did not make plays when we had to, and we gave up way too many points. When you defend like we did tonight, you are going to be playing from behind." Seattle outscored Detroit in the second quarter, 28-15, to take a 47-42 lead into the break. But Billups scored 17 points in the third quarter to give the Pistons a 78-72 edge heading into the final period.
