Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette and Chris Kaman dealt another blow to the Orlando Magic's dwindling playoff hopes. Maggette had 31 points and eight assists and Kaman collected 16 and 11 as the Los Angeles Clippers held on for a 110-102 victory over the reeling Magic. Rookie Dwight Howard had a season-high 29 points and 12 rebounds for Orlando (31-33), which lost its sixth straight game and fell into a tie with Philadelphia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "We're in trouble," said guard Steve Francis, who scored 15 points on 4-of-17 shooting. "We haven't won for like a week or so. This is definitely our lowest point of the season. We just need to get back to playing the up-tempo style of game that we're used to. "We have to quit losing games like this. But we still have 18 games to play and we're still playing for a playoff spot, so we have to just keep going and hope we achieve it." Howard made 14-of-17 shots, but was more upset with his defense against Elton Brand, who finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. "I played OK, but it was still a loss," Howard said. "Elton Brand got a lot of key rebounds and I blame that on me. I really don't care how I do on offense, I have to control my guy on defense." Trailing by 22 points in the fourth quarter, the Magic rallied behind Howard, who scored nine points in a 20-3 run that cut the deficit to 98-93 with just under three minutes to play. "We fell too far behind," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "That's a problem we've been having in the second half. It puts us in a position where we have to play perfect basketball, which is hard to do." Kaman and Bobby Simmons each hit a pair of free throws around a dunk by Kelvin Cato to push the advantage to seven points one minute later. Cato had a chance to make it five-point game at the other end, but Kaman blocked his dunk, sparking a 9-2 burst that all but sealed the victory. "I was just trying to do something to get us going again," Kaman said. "They had all of the momentum and we needed to turn that around." Maggette did most of his damage in the first three quarters, putting the Clippers in position for what appeared to be an easy victory. "We needed this win," Maggette said. "We are just trying to get better and stay focused. I think we did a good job tonight and did a lot of positive things." "It was a pretty impressive performance by Maggette," Davis said. "I thought he was solid at both ends of the court." Grant Hill's jumper with just over nine minutes left in the third period drew the Magic within 62-58 before Maggette took over with 10 points and three assists in a 19-8 run that gave Los Angeles an 81-66 edge with 1:51 left. Simmons scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half and rookie Lionel Chalmers hit a turnaround jumper at the buzzer that gave the Clippers a 58-54 lead. Rookie Jameer Nelson scored 22 points and Hill added 19 for Orlando, who lost despite shooting 51 percent (41-of-81). "I would like to congratulate our two rookies, Dwight and Jameer," Francis said. "They're playing great ball, and for being their first year they're doing a great job."
