Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- For the Orlando Magic, its a new coach but the same result. Ray Allen equaled a season high with 38 points as the shorthanded Seattle SuperSonics stretched the Magic's longest losing streak of the season to seven games with a 98-90 victory. The loss spoiled the coaching debut of Chris Jent, who was named the team's interim coach after Orlando fired Johnny Davis following Wednesday's road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. "I felt like I didn't prepare my team or adjust well enough. Just pointing out small details is not enough," Jent said. "We have to do a better job than that. I kind of failed them in that regard" Both Steve Francis and rookie Dwight Howard were complimentary of Jent's preparation. "I thought guys played hard (for Jent)," Francis said. "Despite us losing seven in a row, I though he sparked guys to play harder, to really want it on defense. I though he did a good job." "Chris is a good coach," Howard said. "He's learning how to lead the team. I could tell he was a little nervous. We just got to sell out to him and know that he is going to do the best job he can to help us win. He is more like a player-coach because he is so young." Despite playing without injured big men Danny Fortson, Jerome James and Vladimir Radmanovic, the SuperSonics were able to halt a four-game home losing streak. "It was an unusual situation with so many guys not available tonight," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "It was a total team effort tonight." "It was a very important win," Allen said. "We had to come out here and just play and do what we do. Just play together and stay together and that's what we did." After Howard tied it at 81-81 on a thunderous dunk with 6:27 left, Allen triggered a 13-4 burst with a jumper 21 seconds later that gave Seattle the lead for good. The All-Star added another jumper during the spurt and capped it with a pair of free throws - finishing 12-of-12 from the line - that gave the Sonics a 94-85 lead with just 18 seconds remaining. "We passed the ball great tonight," Allen added. "A lot of guys got good looks. We played the way we want to play and the way we're capable of playing." Francis scored 19 points despite nursing a sore back. He had eight points after halftime for the Magic (31-34), who fell one game behind Philadelphia 76ers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "I wasn't even sure coming in if I was going to be able to play," Francis said. "I know how important each and every game is for us. I just went out and tried to give maximum effort even though I was going to be a decoy or draw a double team." Second-year forward-center Nick Collison made his third career start and came up big for Seattle, recording the third double-double of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds. "Tonight we had guys who stepped up and played well," McMillan said. "Nick, in a starting role, really played well for us."
