Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- After allowing the Washington Wizards back into the game, the Milwaukee Bucks turned to Joe Smith to straighten things out. Smith scored six of his season-high 24 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes, leading the Bucks to a 99-90 triumph over the Wizards. Leading by 10 points after three quarters, Milwaukee watched Washington stage a 16-6 run to tie the game at 85-85 with 4:47 remaining. But Smith responded with a jumper 25 seconds later, added a basket with 2:15 to go and sank a pair of free throws with 77 seconds left to stake the Bucks to a 95-89 advantage. "I just go out there and get my shots when they're there," Smith said. "I'm trying to be as aggressive as I can." "Joe's gained a second wind," teammate Michael Redd said. "He made shots on the offensive side, hit the glass and did it defensively. He's playing well." Smith's basket with 2:15 left was a tough lefthanded runner over Wizards center Brendan Haywood that followed a tricky spin move. "For some reason, I always play better around the basket with my left," Smith said. "I was just trying to beat the shot clock, get a shot up." "That's the second straight game he's made some big shots," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "He can hurt you in many different ways." Redd - who was just 1-of-4 for four points at the half - scored 16 of his 26 points in the third quarter. Desmond Mason added 17 points and Smith swept 10 rebounds for Milwaukee, which posted its 10th win in 13 home games. "You can't think about it," Redd said of his sluggish start. "You just go play basketball, be patient and try not to force anything. I think I was forcing things early, but I settled down." The Bucks closed the first half with a 14-3 run to turn a two-point advantage into a 56-43 cushion. The Wizards never recovered. "We had one lapse where we weren't there defensively the way we needed to be," Haywood said. "We tried to pick it up after halftime, but we couldn't come back. That second quarter, we just hit a lull." Gilbert Arenas had 27 points and 10 boards, Larry Hughes chipped in 24 and eight and Etan Thomas 10 and 10 for the Wizards, who have dropped nine of their last 11 on the road. Arenas drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key with 4:47 left to tie the game, 85-85, but missed his final four shots of the game. He attempted a career-high 35 shots, making 12. "We knew (Arenas) was a guy that would look to take a lot of shots down the stretch," Redd said. "Him and Larry are going to get their shots. We just tried to limit everyone else." The Wizards had just eight players available as Antawn Jamison (knee), Juan Dixon (ankle), Kwame Brown (flu) and Anthony Peeler (knee) all sat out. But Jordan dismissed the notion being shorthanded cost his team. "We had enough," Jordan said. "We had four bigs and four smalls. There's no excuses. "We started the second quarter with three straight turnovers. Milwaukee fed off it. We wanted to avoid momentum-type plays, and that's what they got. We made a good run, but we didn't play with the composure needed to win."
