Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- LeBron James got some help and Brendan Malone got his first coaching win with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Rookie reserve Anderson Varejao scored 10 of his 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers made a winner of Malone in his first game guiding the team with a 91-76 triumph over the Detroit Pistons, who had won five straight. "I'm so happy that our players are happy because they played so well and they played as a unit tonight," Malone said. "It was a team effort. It was very gratifying." James scored 29 points for the Cavaliers, who on Monday fired coach Paul Silas despite his leading them to the fifth-best record in the Eastern Conference. But Cleveland general manager Jim Paxson believed the team needed a change after losing three consecutive games and nine of 12. Malone, the first coach of the Toronto Raptors but mostly an assistant in a 19-year NBA career, was named the Cavaliers' interim coach Monday, one day after James scored a franchise-record 56 points in a 105-98 setback at Toronto. "It was a great defensive effort," Malone said. "We held them to 29 points in the second half. If we can play with that kind of intensity the rest of the season, we're going to win our share of games." "Guys want to fight for (Malone)," said Cavaliers guard Jeff McInnis, who was replaced by Eric Snow in the starting lineup. "(Malone) is a good coach." Cleveland's reserves scored just one point in the loss to Toronto but managed 27 in this one. The Cavaliers took a 65-59 lead into the fourth quarter and pushed the advantage to 77-66 on a fast-break dunk by Varejao with 5:39 left. The edge was 81-73 with 2:46 remaining before the Brazilian nailed back-to-back jumpers to all but put away the game. "(Varejao) had great confidence tonight," James said. "He played against one of the best power forwards in the Eastern Conference in Rasheed Wallace." Wallace collected 25 points and 10 rebounds and Tayshaun Prince scored 22 points for Detroit, which had won six of its previous seven games. The Cavaliers converted 15 Detroit turnovers into 21 points, while the Pistons managed just two points off nine Cleveland giveaways. "In the third quarter, we stood around too much," said Detroit assistant Gar Heard, filling in once again for Larry Brown, who recently underwent surgery. "We turned it over and we didn't get back (on defense)." The Cavaliers limited Detroit guard Chauncey Billups to four points - 13 fewer than his average. "Chauncey wasn't as aggressive as he is usually is," Snow said. "Maybe our offense took away some of his easy baskets in transition." "This is probably one of the worst games I've played as a Piston," said Billups, who made just 2-of-8 shots. The Pistons were missing guard Richard Hamilton, who suffered a high ankle sprain in a 110-101 victory over San Antonio on Sunday.
