Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics walked into Madison Square Garden with a swagger. The New York Knicks stopped them in their tracks. Jamal Crawford led six players in double figures with 21 points as the Knicks continued their solid play at home with a 107-82 rout of the Celtics. Winners of seven in a row and 11 of 12 since acquiring Antoine Walker on February 24, the Celtics came out very talkative, something that reflected in the quick whistles of the officials, who called two of the game's seven technical fouls 13 seconds apart early in the first quarter. "I thought we ignited them," said Boston coach Doc Rivers, whose team averaged 110.7 points in winning the first three meetings with the Knicks. "We came out running our mouths and acted like a low-class basketball team. We didn't show them any respect. "I really thought the first two minutes our guys were ready to play, but we had guys yapping with guys on their bench, and that is not winning basketball. That is not a winning team. That is a team excited about a winning streak and not acting like a winning team." Boston grabbed an early lead but unraveled after inciting the Knicks (29-37), who remained 3 1/2 games behind Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New York won for the ninth time in 11 home games but begin a critical four-game West Coast trip Friday in Seattle. The Celtics' troubles began when Ricky Davis began talking from the bench to Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury with 9:38 remaining, resulting in a double technical for both players. Just 13 seconds later, Celtics star Paul Pierce and New York's Tim Thomas were handed technicals. "He was running his mouth," Thomas said. "Don't talk if you can't back it up. It's not even MTV and he got punked." "That really woke us up," Knicks reserve forward Jerome Williams said. "That got me fired up, I got the bench fired up. I don't think you want to do that. I knew how they walked in, how they played us here before." Needing a win to retain hopes of making the playoffs, the Knicks countered the trash-talking by recording their most lopsided win of the season. They opened a large lead late in the second quarter and withstood a surge by the Celtics late in the third. "The game got a little physical, but our guys didn't back down," Knicks coach Herb Williams said. "We stepped up and went at them. Anytime that you're challenged on your court, you have to step up." "As a team, we all stood together," Marbury said. "They were talking and we were talking, but that happens. We wanted this game more than they did tonight and that is what it pretty much always come down to." Boston was within 35-33 following a pair of free throws by Marcus Banks with 8:52 left in the second. But the Knicks went on a 19-1 run - highlighted by Crawford's dunk off the glass with 5:12 remaining - and took a 54-34 lead with 3:13 left in the period. The Celtics closed the first half with seven straight points and got within 70-61 with 2:28 to go in the third period. But the Knicks closed the quarter with a 9-1 burst to take a 79-62 edge into the final period. Rookie Trevor Ariza scored 14 points, Thomas added 13 and Taylor 13 and 10 rebounds for New York, which has held its opponents under 100 points eight straight times. Marbury contributed 12 points and seven assists while Malik Rose filled in nicely for the injured Kurt Thomas, finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds. Walker had 13 points and 10 boards for the Celtics, who had scored at least 103 points in their previous six contests. But Walker was just 5-of-20 and the Atlantic Division leaders shot 38 percent (31-of-81) for their lowest offensive output of the season. "We beat ourselves," Walker said. "They played a little bit over their head tonight. We got every shot we wanted." Part of Boston's inept offense was Pierce, who got into early foul trouble and scored five points in 23 minutes, both season lows. After finishing with less than 10 points for only the fourth time this season, he accepted responsibility for the loss. "I will take the blame," Pierce said. "I got into early foul trouble, which really hurt us. That hurts our club when I am not out there."
