Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- If good defense and a strong bench can help a team advance in the playoffs, then the Chicago Bulls will be a force to reckon with. Rookie Ben Gordon scored 13 points and Othella Harrington added 11 in a solid effort from the reserves as they led the Bulls to their eighth straight victory over the Toronto Raptors, 94-85. Chicago's bench outscored Toronto's, 48-21, while the second-stingiest defense in the NBA held the Raptors to just 32 percent (27-of-85) shooting as the Bulls posted their third win in a row and moved within one-half game of Cleveland for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. "We have been able to go down the bench and people have come in and played very well for us all year long," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "Othella kind of ignited us there in the second quarter and we were just able to pull away right there." "We take pride in our defense," Bulls center Eddy Curry said. "We had our offense clicking early on, but at the end it was time for us to buckle down and play defense and we pulled it off." The Bulls were without starting point guard Kirk Hinrich, who was unable to play because of a sore left hamstring. "We would rather have Kirk every night , of course," Skiles said. "But not having him and the way our guys were able to come in here and get this win is big for us." Despite making just 5-of-24 shots in the first quarter, Toronto scored the final 10 points of the period to take a 21-20 advantage. But Harrington scored seven points as Chicago opened the second with a 19-0 burst. Jannero Pargo scored all six of his points during the spurt as 17 of the 19 were scored by non-starters. "When we play like that, we are hard to beat," Harrington said. "We have young guys who are playing a lot of minutes and doing an excellent job, but you know it's good to have that bench that is able to come in and provide the energy and give a spark and get the team back on track." "It's more disappointing than anything to fight back and then give up a 19-0 run and go down by 18," said Toronto forward Chris Bosh, who finished with nine points and nine rebounds. "We can't do that if we expect to win." Behind 15-of-18 shooting in the second quarter, Chicago outscored Toronto, 40-20, in the period and held a 60-41 advantage at the half. It took an 84-64 lead with 11:04 to go on a runner by Curry, who scored 16 points. The Raptors responded by going on a 16-4 run capped on a layup with 6:08 remaining by Rafer Alston, who scored 15 points. But Toronto got no closer the rest of the way. Former Bull Jalen Rose scored 30 points for the Raptors, who fell 4 1/2 games behind Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the East. "We didn't compete like a team that at least has an opportunity to make the playoffs," Rose said. "They were more energetic about the game and in the second quarter, they just dominated us."
