Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies survived a while without Pau Gasol. But they have to be glad he is back for the season's stretch run. Gasol scored a pair of baskets to key fourth-quarter run that lifted the Grizzlies to a 105-96 victory over the New Jersey Nets, who had a season-high five-game winning streak snapped. Memphis went 15-8 without Gasol, who was out with plantar fasciaitis in his left foot. Previously, the 2002 Rookie of the Year had missed just four games in his career. "(The foot) feels better than I thought," said Gasol, playing in his second game since returning. "I'm happy. Slowly, it's coming back." "Today we gave him 24 (minutes) and he ended with some big baskets in the end," Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. Holding an 85-84 lead, Memphis went on a 10-0 run to take control. Earl Watson sparked the spurt with a 3-pointer at the 6:04 mark and Gasol got loose for a pair of baskets in the lane. With the Nets concentrating on Gasol down low, James Posey found an opening and capped the run with bucket from the arc with 4:01 left. "They started doing a cross-pick to the pick-and-roll, and we were getting confused on that," New Jersey forward Jason Collins said. "They were able to get it into the paint and they were able to kick it out and get open guys." Gasol collected 10 points and seven rebounds. Following the final buzzer, he was serenaded by a group of fans waving his native Spanish flag. "It makes me feel great," said Gasol, who noted similar displays by fans in New York and Chicago. "I'm happy and proud to see people from Spain supporting me." Jason Williams and Lorenzen Wright each scored 20 points for Memphis (39-28). Williams was 8-of-9 from the field and added five assists while Wright was perfect on eight shots and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Grizzlies shot 57 percent (37-of-65). Now two games behind Philadelphia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the Nets managed a 55-53 edge at the break despite allowing Memphis to shoot 70 percent (21-of-30) from the field. All-Star Vince Carter scored 22 points but made just 8-of-20 shots. Nenad Krstic added 21 for the Nets (32-37), who could not defend the Grizzlies' ball movement. "They tried to front as much as they could," Gasol said. "We tried high-low, but they were overloading the other side." Seventh-place Memphis is 2 1/2 games ahead of Denver and five in front of Minnesota in the Western Conference race. For the first time since November 6 - before Fratello took over - the Grizzlies had their top 10 players available, although Fratello limited Stromile Swift to two minutes due to a sprained left ankle. Brian Cardinal, who had nine points and six assists, stands to lose frontcourt minutes with the return of Gasol and Swift but is willing to make the personal sacrifice to aid Memphis' playoff charge. "My mind-set's the same," he said. "You look for Pau and Stro to get healthy. Those guys are tremendous players."
