Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After nearly relinquishing a big lead for the second consecutive game, the Los Angeles Clippers once again have Corey Maggette to thank for keeping their razor-thin playoff hopes alive. Maggette scored 26 points, including seven in the final two minutes, as the Clippers held on to end a five-game losing streak to the Washington Wizards, 98-94. For the third consecutive game, Los Angeles never trailed, but for the second straight time, it nearly blew a big fourth-quarter lead. On Thursday, the Clippers held a 19-point lead going into the fourth but saw it dwindle to six before Maggette helped the team pull away for a 116-108 win against Milwaukee. Los Angeles has had problems all season late in games, as evidenced by its league-worst 3-12 mark in contests decided by three points or fewer. "If we could just keep closing out games, even if the other team makes it close, we will be in good shape," Clippers rookie guard Shaun Livingston said. "If we had been doing it all season, we'd be in eighth place right now." In this one, Los Angeles led, 82-65, after a pair of free throws by Maggette with 8:24 remaining. But the Wizards stormed back, pulling within 92-91 on a 3-pointer by Laron Profit with 27 seconds left. "It was a gutsy effort," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "It was too bad that we didn't have that energy in the beginning of the game or through most stretches of the game." "They started to come back because they hit shots," Maggette said. "They had guys who don't even shoot threes start hitting threes." Gilbert Arenas scored eight of his 33 points during the spurt. The Clippers responded with a layup by Elton Brand, who scored 25 points, and, after a missed 3-pointer by Profit, Maggette sank a pair of free throws for a 96-91 lead with 11 seconds left. Wizards reserve Damone Brown connected on a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 96-94 with seven seconds left. Maggette answered with another two from the line to seal the victory for Los Angeles, which trails eighth-place Denver by six games with 13 games to go. The Clippers play 10 of those contests away from the Staples Center, including the next seven. "I talked about (the road trip) in the locker room after the game," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We've got to play with that same kind of confidence on the road. It's a good test for us mentally as a group as far as being able to take it on the road and make something happen." Los Angeles jumped out to a 10-point lead after one quarter and rode reserve Zeljko Rebraca's 12 second-quarter points to a 52-39 lead at the half. Rebraca finished with 19 points - matching a season high. "Z was terrific," Dunleavy said. "We delivered the ball to him in the right spot and he can finish.
