Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- When a team is on a season-high losing streak, there is nothing it likes more than to see the lowly Atlanta Hawks coming to town. Manu Ginobili scored 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the San Antonio Spurs snapped their season-worst three-game skid with a 111-95 victory over the league-worst Hawks. "We were upset about the way we were playing with three losses in a row, but we broke through tonight," Ginobili said. "We knew we weren't playing the best team in the league, but we had to give good effort and we really needed the win. We really wanted to come strong with good energy tonight, and we did that." Brent Barry added a season-high 23 points and Tony Parker 22 for the Spurs, whose skid started when MVP candidate Tim Duncan suffered a severe ankle sprain at Detroit on Sunday. "I tried to just get myself back in a rhythm. It was a nice opportunity to get playing time," Barry said. "It was nice to get back on track. We'll take the win." San Antonio (51-18), which pulled within one-half game of Phoenix for the best record in the Western Conference, jumped out to a 33-19 lead after one quarter and took a 59-39 advantage into the break. "We needed a win tonight," Parker said. "I am happy because everyone played well, and we gave a great effort. This was a really good win for us. After the games recently on the road, this is what we needed." "We shared the ball better tonight and played very unselfish," Ginobili said. "It was important that we accomplished this." Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo was not that impressed with the team's effort. "We played better than the last two games, but I'm still disappointed that we didn't put together 48 minutes," he said. Atlanta (11-57) climbed within 86-79 on a layup by Boris Diaw with 8:13 remaining, but Barry countered with a runner. Ginobili then scored 10 straight Spurs points, opening a 98-85 cushion when he grabbed a rebound, beat every Hawks player dribbling down the court and dunked over Tyronn Lue with 4:26 remaining. "I wanted to make something happen and the shots were falling in the fourth," Ginobili said. Reserve Tony Delk had 24 points to pace the Hawks, who have lost seven straight games and 20 of 21. "To get down like we did is inexcusable," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "We didn't come out ready to play and the Spurs will come out and get after you. After we talked at the half, we were able to come out with some intensity and get back into the game with pressure. The Spurs took good shots and defended well and deserved to win." "They played well," Delk said. "Ginobili had a good game and Tony was quick all night and found guys open. When Brent Barry is able to get free and knock down shots, they are hard to beat. They played well as a team tonight."
