Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Avery Johnson has the Dallas Mavericks playing better defense. They still have plenty of offensive weapons, though. Josh Howard and Keith Van Horn fueled a fourth-quarter surge as the Mavericks held on for their sixth win in seven games, a 95-88 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The Mavericks improved to 5-1 under Johnson, who has implored the team to put more effort into defense since taking over for Don Nelson just over a week ago. Since the coaching change, Dallas has held three opponents under 90 points, improving to 17-1 this season. "I'm not worried about how many points they have or what their shooting percentage was," Johnson said. "I'm happy with the fact that we are taking teams deeper into the shot clock and making them rush shots. Earlier in the season, that didn't happen; we were only playing defense for 12 or 14 seconds. To win, you have to play defense for the whole 24." The latest victim was the Pistons, who got off to a terrible start and trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half. The defending NBA champions battled back to take a brief lead in the third quarter but trailed, 70-65, entering the final period. "It's a lot of hard work trying to get back into a game when you're down (that much)," said Pistons guard Chauncey Billups, who scored 26 points. "We were a couple of possessions away from taking control." Detroit might have trailed by just two points, but Dallas rookie Devin Harris hit a 3-pointer as the third-quarter buzzer sounded. "I thought that was the turning point of the game," said Pistons assistant Gar Heard, who fell to 8-8 filling in for Larry brown. "It is easier to go into the fourth quarter down two than five. We cannot let them get a shot that deep. We have to stop the ball." Howard, who scored 24 points, began the fourth quarter with a jumper before Van Horn added a follow shot and a pair of 3-pointers to offset a 3-point barrage from Billups. "It was a hard-fought game," Howard said. "It was almost like a playoff game, where both teams are scrapping for the victory. We just outfought them." A three-point play by Howard pushed the lead to 86-76 with 6:07 to play. Jason Terry drained a 3-pointer and Van Horn found Shawn Bradley for a dunk and a 91-76 bulge with 4:32 left. "We know our offense will roll - we've got all-world scorers - but the X factor is if we are going to be able to maintain a solid defense, especially against a good defensive team," Bradley said. Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points and Van Horn added 17 for the Mavericks (47-23), who are virtually locked into the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoff race. "The Pistons play a physical game, but our mental toughness got us through it," Bradley said. "That's something this team hasn't been known for." Richard Hamilton scored 23 points for the Pistons (43-27), who saw their bench outscored, 26-2, and lost for the fourth time in five games. "Anytime you have one of your leaders (Brown) out, you're going to miss him somewhat," said forward Ben Wallace, who had 10 points and 17 rebounds. "But we know what it takes. We've got to go out and get it done. We've got to stop trying to make excuses for ourselves and go out and play basketball."
