Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors may be headed to the draft lottery for the 11th straight season, but Baron Davis is giving them hope for the future. Davis had 33 points and nine assists as the Warriors won for the fifth time in six games, posting a 108-100 victory over the road-weary New York Knicks. Golden State (25-45) has not made the postseason since 1994 but has been rejuvenated by the acquisition of Davis, a two-time All-Star who was obtained at the trading deadline from the New Orleans Hornets. "It's just for us to jell, get to know each other more on the court, get more confidence and just build from there," Davis said. "My teammates have been great, and they expect me to lead. That's what I'm going to do, night in and night out." During the Warriors hot streak, Davis is averaging 24.2 points and 8.2 assists. "Baron played very well," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "(He) accepts a challenge. He's getting in better shape and he's getting more comfortable with our guys." Davis was relatively quiet in the final period until the Warriors saw their 11-point lead trimmed to 92-86 on a jumper by Maurice Taylor with 5:30 left. Davis found Jason Richardson with an alley-oop pass on the other end and fed Richardson for a 3-pointer with 4:13 remaining. Following another jumper by Taylor, Davis and Richardson connected again for an alley-oop slam to cap the 7-2 burst that pushed Golden State's advantage to 99-88 with 2:48 to play. The Warriors' leading scorer, Richardson scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. "He had a big fourth and he's that type of player," Davis said. "You only need a couple of shots to get going, and that's what this team is made up with - guys who can get hot at any time - and we utilize that." New York cut the deficit to 106-100 with 27 seconds left and had a chance to draw closer after Richardson missed a pair of free throws five seconds later. But Richardson grabbed the rebound and hit both from the line after being fouled by Kurt Thomas. Stephon Marbury scored 27 of his 31 points in the second half for New York (29-40), which fell to 0-3 on its current four-game trip. " It's always an opportunity to see where I stand in a measure stick," Davis said of his matchup with Marbury. "He's one of the guys I admire and look up to and he's always helped me with my game. It's always a great challenge and a great battle when we step on the court against each other." The Knicks have lost eight of their last nine road games and are 5 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with 13 games remaining. "Tonight, nothing really happened except we lost the game that we played," said Knicks guard Jamal Crawford, who had 13 points and eight assists. "We have to get it together. If we don't, all the playoff talk can stop." "We can't basically put our heads down and say it's over with because, mathematically, we're still in it," Marbury said. "I think, as a group, everyone is coming in trying to do the right thing to win the game. It just didn't happen that way tonight." Golden State closed the first half with a 9-0 run to forge a 44-44 tie. Troy Murphy scored four points during the spurt, then added nine of his 19 in the third period, when the Warriors opened a 76-67 lead. Murphy also finished with 19 rebounds for his 29th double-double of the season, nearly missing his first career 20 point-20 rebound game.
