Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- After losing their floor leader in the midst of a second-quarter collapse, the Detroit Pistons were faced with the prospect of furthering their recent slide. Richard Hamilton and Ben Wallace decided to end the skid right there. Hamilton scored 11 of his 24 points and Wallace added eight and five rebounds in the third quarter to lift the Pistons to a 99-82 victory over the Sacramento Kings. Detroit, losers of four of its last five games and in need of a win to fend off hard-charging Chicago in the Central Division, saw most of a 17-point lead and starting point guard Chauncey Billups vanish in a miserable stretch before halftime. The Kings closed the second quarter on an 18-5 run to get within 46-42. When Billups was ejected for arguing with officials with 2.8 seconds left in the half, what had the look of a rout turned into a dogfight. "Chauncey (Billups) is one of our main guys, and when he went out everybody else had to step up," Hamilton said. Hamilton and Wallace prevented any further collapse, keying a 20-8 run to start the third period that pushed the Pistons' lead to 66-50. Wallace kicked off the burst with a three-point play and Hamilton scored seven points soon thereafter. "The third quarter was the key to tonight's game," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "They got their lead up to 10-15 points and it was just too much for us to overcome." Hamilton finished the quarter with a runner just before the buzzer, sending Detroit into the fourth with a 75-60 advantage. "They made a run at the end of the (first) half," said Hamilton, who had eight assists. "They got a lot of calls and we had a couple of (technical fouls). Before the third quarter we talked about how we had to play like we did in the first quarter." Wallace made it sound simple. "We just tried to run our sets on offense, get some stops, and try to get to the free-throw line," he said. "If you execute the way you're supposed to, good things are going to happen." Sacramento got within eight points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but a late 10-1 run by Detroit sealed it. Wallace finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds for Detroit, which defeated Sacramento for just the second time in the last 12 meetings. Pistons assistant coach Gar Heard, who filled in for Larry Brown for the 10th straight game, had been critical of the Pistons' bench after it provided just two points in a loss to Dallas on Monday. With Billups ejected and reserve guard Carlos Arroyo out with the flu, the reserves needed a better effort in this one. Lindsey Hunter provided the big boost off the bench, scoring nine points, handing out four assists and making four steals in 27 minutes. "I was mad at (Billups) at first. He should know better than that by now," Hunter said with a laugh. "I'm going to play hard all the time, whether I'm in the game for five minutes or 30. I'm not going to change the way I play." Hunter earned the praise of Tayshaun Prince, who helped in running the point in Billups's absence. "Lindsey brought a lot of energy, created some turnovers, knocked some shots down and ran the offense well," Prince said. "That's how it has to be when somebody goes out." "It seemed like everybody stepped up," Heard said after his bench outscored Sacramento's, 29-16. "I have to give the bench credit tonight. Guys came in and really played well." Mike Bibby scored 26 points and had eight assists for Sacramento, which was outrebounded, 44-35. "Mike was the only guy who was hitting his shots in the second half," said Kings forward Peja Stojakovic, who finished with 15 points but just three after halftime. "A lot of it was us, but a lot of it was them, too," tojakovic added. "It seemed like they just kept coming at us. They have a lot of great defenders on their team. They are a championship team. They know their advantages and they know how to use them." Brown is expected to be back on the bench for Friday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He had surgery March 14 to fix complications associated with the hip surgery he had on November 3. "It'll be good to get all the pieces back for the stretch run," Wallace said. "Then we can focus on basketball, and we won't have to answer all the questions about when he's coming back." With the win, the Pistons (44-27) maintained a 4 1/2-game lead over the Bulls with 11 games to play.
