Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The efforts of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady showed why the Houston Rockets are one of the NBA's best road teams. Yao scored 29 points and McGrady added 26 as the Rockets closed another strong four-game road trip with a 100-84 victory over the struggling Portland Trail Blazers. In Houston's last three four-game road swings, the team has posted a 10-2 mark, including 3-1 on this trip. The Rockets are 12-5 in their last 17 road games and just one of six teams with winning road record (22-15). "I think at one point we were 4-8 on the road, then something clicked," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Since then, we're 18-7 or something like that. It's hard to do. It's also hard to loose as many games as we have at home." Houston never was really challenged in this one as Yao scored 14 points to give the Rockets a 31-21 advantage late in the first period. "I told (Yao) before the game that he needed to get off to a good start," McGrady said. "He needed to be aggressive and set the tone. He answered the call and he just played great tonight. Portland's Damon Stoudamire had a layup, steal and 3-pointer to halve the deficit before the end of the quarter. But McGrady scored 15 points in the second period, including a 3-pointer to close an 8-0 burst that made it 39-26. "The bucket's looking pretty big right now," McGrady said. "I feel like I can get my shot off when I want. I feel when I release it it's going to go in. It's a great feeling to have, especially when you know that you're going to the playoffs." "They got one of the best perimeter players and probably the second best center in the league," Portland forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. "With those ingredients, it makes them tough." The Trail Blazers got as close as 65-57 four minutes into the third quarter before McGrady scored seven points in a 16-7 surge that ended the period with Houston leading, 83-64. Yao, who sank 12-of-18 shots, added seven points in the fourth quarter for the Rockets, who swept the season series for the first time since the 1993-94 campaign. The Rockets have won the last seven meetings between the teams. "Yao is a very big guy," Trail Blazers center Joel Przybilla said. "Not only big but skillful. With him and McGrady out on the court at the same time, it makes quite a tandem. Very impressive." "I was really aggressive on the offensive boards," said Yao, who grabbed four offensive rebounds. "I think that's a key for every game. Coach was very focused on asking everybody to go to the boards, on offense and defense." Abdur-Rahim scored 21 points for Portland, which dropped to 2-13 under interim coach Kevin Pritchard. "It's hard to say anything else except that's a really good team," Pritchard said. "They have a great model for success right now in the fact that they have two superstars and they surround them with tough nosed guys that are willing to do anything to win." The highlight of the game came early in the first quarter when Yao picked up a loose ball at center court, dribbled it behind his back to avoid Abdur-Rahim, resulting in a break away dunk that brought the Rockets' bench to its feet. "When you're 7-6 and doing stuff like that it's exciting," McGrady said. "What's so good about that is that it looked natural. He didn't think about it or anything, it just came to him."
