Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls withstood some last-second magic from LeBron James and continued their improbable march toward the postseason. After allowing James to tie the game with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, the Bulls scored the first 11 points of overtime and pushed their season-high winning streak to eight games with a 102-90 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Rookie Ben Gordon scored 21 points off the bench for Chicago (40-31), which moved within one-half game of fourth-place Washington in the Eastern Conference. Apparently nothing can stop the Bulls from their first playoff berth since the Michael Jordan era ended seven years ago. They won despite the absence of leading scorer Eddy Curry, who is hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat. Chicago squandered an 85-79 lead in the last two minutes of regulation before Gordon - Gordon, who leads the NBA in double-digit fourth quarters - rose for a jumper but fired a pass underneath to Tyson Chandler, who scored and was fouled. His free throw made it 88-85 with 2.8 seconds left. After a timeout, James took the inbounds pass and dribbled once before draining a 25-footer over Gordon at the horn that silenced the United Center. "It felt good," James said. "I got a good screen from my bigs. I took one dribble because I had 2.8 seconds. I just took my time and let it rock." Unfazed, the Bulls opened overtime with jumpers by Antonio Davis and Kirk Hinrich before Chandler added another three-point play for a 95-88 lead with 3:21 remaining. Davis sank two free throws and rookie Andres Nocioni made a jumper before Cleveland final scored in the last minute. "The shot LeBron hit was like a home run in the bottom of the ninth and that gave us an opportunity to play overtime," interim Cavaliers coach Brendan Malone said. "Once we were in overtime Chicago executed under pressure. They executed with offensive precision and our execution on offense was poor. Poor is probably a mild word." "Going into the huddle we were not demoralized," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "We were ready to play more. As a matter of fact we were kind of angry about it. Then we just came out and took control right away." Davis had 17 points and nine rebounds and Chandler added 15 and 14 for the Bulls, who had six scorers in double figures. Hinrich, returning after missing five games with a hamstring strain, collected 13 points and seven assists. "It's a testament to the kind of team we are," Gordon said. "If somebody is out, somebody else is stepping up and picking up the slack." Drew Gooden had 27 points and 12 rebounds and James scored 26 points for the Cavaliers (37-33), who are just one-half game ahead of seventh-place Indiana in the East. They have lost 12 of their last 13 road games. "I thought we would have some momentum (in overtime), but we got outscored 14-2 and we didn't get any stops defensively," Gooden said. "It seemed like they wanted it more as a home game." "I just tried to make it tough for him because he is such a great player," Nocioni said. "If he catches the ball it's impossible to stop him, so I tried to just deny the ball and play him hard." James played all 53 minutes but made just 10-of-28 shots and 5-of-11 free throws as he was harassed by Nocioni. In the second quarter, he elbowed the Argentine on a drive and was on the receiving end of a hard foul moments later. "He does a lot of grabbing and holding and scratching and everything to irritate me," James said. "He did a good job of fighting me tonight, and he got help from his back line. You can't do anything but give him credit." The Bulls never trailed after taking the lead late in the third quarter, when the Cavaliers made just 5-of-20 shots and 3-of-8 free throws. A floater by Gordon made it 78-70 with 7:05 left. Cleveland closed to 82-79 on a hoop by Gooden before Gordon made another floater and a free throw for an 85-79 edge with 2:11 remaining.
