Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett led a balanced attack that may have ended any realistic playoff hopes for the Los Angeles Lakers. Garnett scored 26 points and Sam Cassell added 13 of his 15 in the fourth quarter as the Minnesota Timberwolves tied a season high with their fifth consecutive win, a 105-96 triumph over the fading Lakers. Seven players scored in double figures for Minnesota (38-34), which moved within two games of Denver and Memphis for the Western Conference's final playoff spot. "At this point, we're just thinking about one game at a time," Garnett said. "That's the way we have to think. That has to be our focus." The Timberwolves were battling for the best record in the Western Conference a season ago, which is why Garnett is frustrated with the team's performance in this campaign. "This has been a terrible year," he said. "It's no fun winning a couple, then losing a couple and going back and forth all year. When you weigh this (winning streak) against the way we've played all year, this has to be our best stretch." Minnesota coach Kevin McHale didn't want to think about his team's playoff chances. "We can't think that far ahead," he said. "We had a game tonight that we had to win and we won it. We have to win every one of them now. We have 10 games left. We're still trying to get better every game, every shoot around, every practice." Los Angeles (33-38) has lost nine of its last 10 and dropped 6 1/2 games back of a postseason spot with 11 games left. "Our window for the playoffs is shrinking every day," Lakers forward Devean George said. "Mathematically, we are not out of it yet, but going through this losing spell is tough. We are trying hard, but not getting it done." The Timberwolves never were headed after the midway point in the first quarter in which Garnett collected seven points and seven of his 12 rebounds. Kobe Bryant scored 26 points, including a 3-pointer to cut the Lakers' deficit to 56-53 midway through the third quarter. However, Wally Szczerbiak, who scored 15 points, capped an 11-4 burst at the end of the third that gave Minnesota a 77-64 bulge. "I think if you watched us tonight, you saw that we played hard," Bryant said. "We just didn't do it for 48 minutes." The Lakers got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter, but Cassell scored the last five points in a 7-0 spurt that gave the Timberwolves their largest lead, 97-83, with 3 1/2 minutes to go. "I didn't do anything different except make my shots," Cassell said. "I was missing shots I normally make in the first half. We had good balance tonight and we have to have that again tomorrow night in Phoenix." Caron Butler added 22 points for Los Angeles, which last missed the playoffs in the 1993-94 season.
