Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Marcus Camby's quick start and Earl Boykins' big finish kept the Denver Nuggets cruising toward a playoff berth. Camby had 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks and Boykins scored 23 points as the Nuggets won for the 16th time in 18 games, posting a 102-84 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Five players scored in double figures for Denver (40-31), which remained tied with Memphis for seventh place in the Western Conference, three games ahead of ninth-place Minnesota. "It was a good team effort from everybody tonight," said guard Andre Miller, who scored 12 points. "One guy can't carry this team. Different guys have been stepping up." Coach George Karl, who improved to 23-6 since taking over in January, was surprised at how easily the Nuggets handled the Southwest Division-leading Spurs. "I didn't think this would be a 20-point game," Karl said. "I'm not sure how good we are. I don't know if anyone knows how good we are." Camby collected eight points, one assist, two blocks and three rebounds as the Nuggets closed the first quarter with a 19-5 run to take a 27-14 lead. "(Camby) was pretty good tonight," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "He played very good defense and was there to contest every shot. Next time, we just have to be careful because he's a very good shot blocker." With Spurs superstar Tim Duncan missing his sixth straight game, Camby was able to dominate inside on both ends of the floor, helping Denver score 46 points in the paint and outscore San Antonio, 27-7, on the fast break. "I take pride in my defense," Camby said. "I just control the paint. It feels good to get the rebound and start a fast break." "Duncan is not here," San Antonio All-Star Manu Ginobili said. "There's nothing we can do about it. Time will tell if he will be back before the season ends. We just have to start playing better, making more shots and making less mistakes." The Spurs rallied in the third period behind Ginobili, who scored 10 of his 13 points in an 18-5 spurt. Bruce Bowen's layup cut the deficit to 62-58 with 4:30 remaining. "I thought we made a good run at it in the second half," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "We just didn't have enough juice and couldn't make that shot to get over the hump." The Spurs got no closer as Boykins scored four points in an 11-4 burst that finished the quarter and added 11 more in the fourth period to seal the victory. "They made a run at it," Boykins said. "But we kept playing and got the game back to our up-tempo pace and that was pretty much the game." Parker scored 17 points on 8-of-18 shooting for San Antonio (53-19), which dropped its fifth consecutive road contest and fell two games behind Phoenix for the top seed in the West.
