Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Ray Allen's steady play helped the Seattle SuperSonics reach a significant milestone. Allen scored 19 points and the SuperSonics won their 50th game of the season with a 89-87 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The SuperSonics (50-22) chalked up their seventh victory in nine outings and recorded their first 50-win campaign since 1997-98, when they were 61-21. "A lot of these guys in this locker room don't understand what winning 50 games means," Allen said. "It's a great milestone in the NBA. I'm very proud of this whole team." Jerome James followed a missed free throw by Antonio Daniels with a dunk to put Seattle on top, 85-83, with 2:01 left. Shareef Abdur-Rahim tied the score 16 seconds later with a short jumper. Allen sank a 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining to put the SuperSonics back in front, 88-85. Abdur-Rahim, who scored Portland's last 10 points, made a pair from the line with 29 seconds left. Daniels made 1-of-2 from the line with 14 seconds left, giving Portland a chance to tie or win. But Abdur-Rahim missed an eight-footer in the lane and Nick Collison grabbed the final rebound to hand Portland its 10th loss in 11 games. "I felt good about it," Abdur-Rahim said. "It felt good when it left my hands. Jerome James came over and contested. He's so big. But it felt good." Rookie Damien Wilkins scored 17 points, Collison added 14 and Reggie Evans swept 13 rebounds for Seattle, which had a 45-35 edge on the boards and won the season series, 3-1. Wilkins started in place of injured forward Rashard Lewis, who has a bone bruise in his right foot. The All-Star had an MRI Friday and will undergo further tests early next week. "Coach (McMillian) is doing a great job to make sure I understand how to be ready to make sure when my number's called that I'm ready to go out and perform," Wilkins said. "I'm just trying to do just half of the stuff Rashard does out there." Wilkins scored in double figures for the third straight game and fourth time in his career. The rookie is averaging nearly 12 points over his last six games for the undermanned Sonics. Abdur-Rahim scored 21 points, rookie Sebastian Telfair added 18 and Darius Miles 13 for the Trail Blazers, who fell to 2-14 under interim coach Kevin Pritchard and dropped their ninth straight road game. Telfair scored 10 points in a 12-2 run that gave Portland a 48-36 lead with 2:20 left before halftime. "He was really good in the first half and I thought he controlled the game in the second half," Pritchard said. "It doesn't happen overnight. But I feel like this team is taking on the personality that I want it to take." Seattle turned things around with an 18-1 run bridging the second and third quarters, highlighted by consecutive 3-pointers by Allen and another by Wilkins, for a 59-51 advantage.
