Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Andre Barrett is no stranger to making big shots at Continental Airlines Arena. Signed to a 10-day contract on Thursday, the Seton Hall product buried a pair of critical jumpers in the final 3 1/2 minutes as the shorthanded Orlando Magic posted a crucial 103-102 triumph over the New Jersey Nets. With Seton Hall playing most of its marquee games at the North Jersey arena, Barrett was on familiar ground when he put the Magic (35-38) ahead, 98-96, with a 16-foot jumper with 3:16 remaining. He added another jumper 31 seconds later to cap a 7-0 burst and was mobbed by his new teammates. "It's good to come back here and have an opportunity to hit some open shots," he said. "I'm fairly new to this team. It's good to be on a team like this." "We just signed Andre Barrett, and he did a great job of knocking down shots and playing defense on Jason Kidd," Orlando guard Steve Francis said. New Jersey responded when Vince Carter reclaimed the lead at 102-101 with a long 3-pointer with 38 seconds left. However Francis, who had 14 of his 33 points in the final quarter, buried two free throws just 13 seconds later to make it 103-102. The Nets had a golden opportunity to tie Philadelphia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but Kidd missed a wide-open jumper from the right wing in the final seconds. "I had a great look, I wish I had it again," said Kidd, who had 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists but missed 13-of-21 shots. "We've got eight games left, we just have to win as many as we can and see where we stand at the end." Barrett finished with 11 points, making 5-of-10 shots, as Orlando played without injured All-Star Grant Hill and moved one-half game ahead of New Jersey in the playoff race. "We have a lot of guys on this team that do things," Francis said. "It's not going to be just one guy carrying this team." New Jersey (35-39) had won three straight games and eight of nine since losing to Orlando here on March 5. In that game, rookie Jameer Nelson, who played his final college game here, scored a career-high 22 points. Barrett was signed after Nelson suffered a rib cage tear and has made an immediate impact for the Magic, who had lost 11 of 14 since their last visit to the Meadowlands - firing coach Johnny Davis in the process. Rookie Nenad Krstic had a season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds and Carter added 21 points despite playing limited minutes in the second half due to foul trouble, which plagued New Jersey. The Magic went 36-of-46 from the line - led by Francis, who was 14-of-15. The dominance from the line helped Orlando erase a 13-point second-half deficit. "We helped ourselves," Orlando coach Chris Jent said. "We were aggressive and getting to the line. We were just thinking 'attack, attack, attack.'" New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank received two technical fouls, getting ejected when he ran on to the court to check on Krstic after a flagrant foul. But the second technical was rescinded after the officials conferred, allowing Frank to remain on the sidelines. "Realizing that there was a flagrant foul - I perceive how Frank thought there was going to be an altercation and why he ran on the court," referee Derrick Stafford said. "He came as a peacemaker and he went to see about his player. It was OK not to call the technical." Orlando responded with seven of the next eight points, including Barrett's two clutch jumpers. "Maybe that motivated Orlando," Kidd said of the rescinded technical foul. "Maybe they felt they got shafted."
