Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- With their playoff hopes still very slim, the Minnesota Timberwolves again turned to Kevin Garnett. Garnett scored 30 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had six assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 112-100 triumph over the Sacramento Kings. Minnesota (39-35) has won six of seven to move within 2 1/2 games of Memphis for the final Western Conference postseason spot. The Timberwolves, who have not missed the playoffs since 1996, have seven games left. "We're just playing ball," Minnesota guard Sam Cassell said. "We don't have anyone to blame for the situation we're in but ourselves. The only people that are going to get us out of this situation is ourselves. We've got to keep doing what we're doing, playing hard." Garnett is assured of becoming the first player to average 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in six consecutive seasons, breaking a tie with Larry Bird, who did it from 1981-1985. Minnesota shot 63 percent (12-of-19) from the floor in the second quarter and got 13 points from Cassell for a 47-46 halftime lead. The Timberwolves widened the margin to 80-66 in the third quarter, when Garnett and Latrell Sprewell combined for 11 points during a 15-4 run. Cuttino Mobley scored 11 straight points for Sacramento, capped by a 3-pointer with 3:01 remaining that cut the deficit to 100-93. But Garnett hit a jumper and Sprewell nailed a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions, giving Minnesota a 105-93 lead with 1:57 to go. Sprewell scored 23 points, Cassell added 16 and Michael Olowokandi 15 for the Wolves, who shot 53 percent (44-of-83). "It's a real commitment by the guys ... to just run our defensive schemes and to be more aggressive," Wolves interim coach Kevin McHale said. "It's a tribute to them. The one game we tried to be a little more conservative, we lost (against Phoenix). Coaches make mistakes, too. I'm just really proud of those guys." Peja Stojakovic scored 25 points to lead five Kings in double figures. Mike Bibby scored 19 points, Mobley 16 and Kenny Thomas 11 with 16 rebounds for Sacramento (45-30), which remains one-half game ahead of Houston for fifth place in the West. "We just didn't guard them well enough the whole game," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "They made shots. They took turns making shots. In the second half, it was like they continued to make shots and we got our heads down. They played like a team that really needed to win and they shot it well and executed well." The Kings set an Arco Arena record with 20 offensive rebounds in the first half and finished with a 55-41 edge on the boards. But they were outscored 65-45 in the second and third quarters. "We're inconsistent," Mobley said. "We show little spurts of being a playoff team, and then you have games like today and games like Detroit, where you can't buy a basket and miss defensive assignments."
