Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- In a matter of seconds, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost their cool and their lead. LeBron James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas prevented them from losing the game. James and Ilgauskas combined for 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers regrouped for a 100-80 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. The Cavaliers (38-34) squandered a 20-point lead and saw power forwards Drew Gooden and Robert Traylor ejected late in the third quarter. They recovered behind their All-Stars to snap a two-game slide and remain tied with Indiana for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Cleveland held a 56-52 lead when Traylor was called for a questionable foul on Jerry Stackhouse. He drew a technical foul for arguing, then was ejected for tossing his armband into the stands. Gooden also was ejected for throwing his headband into the stands. Stackhouse made two technical foul shots and two free throws to tie the game and Michael Finley sank a 3-pointer, to give Dallas its first lead of the game at 59-56 with 9.2 seconds left in the third quarter. "It's an automatic ejection once you throw anything into the stands," Gooden said. "I guess that's a new rule; I didn't know about it at the time. I was just mad, that's it." "I think the crowd came alive when (Gooden) and (Traylor) were ejected," Cavaliers interim coach Brendan Malone said. "LeBron said right after the technicals, 'I got it.' When you have a player of his caliber saying I got it, you got it." At the other end, Finley fouled James as he attempted a 3-pointer and argued the call, drawing a technical. James made all four free throws, giving Cleveland the lead for good. "I knew they had a foul to give," James said. "So I anticipated the foul and got the shot off because I knew they were going to try to foul me." "That was huge," Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. "We had the momentum. We go up, and that deflated them. But they came back and took the lead back. That was a huge momentum swing." Ilgauskas scored 21 points, including eight in the first three-plus minutes of the final period to help build the lead to 71-63. James scored 13 of his 37 points in the last seven minutes, allowing Cleveland to pull away. The Cavaliers scored 40 points in the fourth quarter, a season high for any period. "We didn't lose our poise," Malone said. "We went into the fourth quarter with a one-point lead. (Ilgauskas) was struggling throughout the game. It was in the fourth quarter when he came alive and he came up big for us. "We were really disappointed, most of all with our defense in the first and fourth quarters, especially in the fourth," Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said. "Forty points is unacceptable. Ilgauskas pulled down 16 rebounds and James added 10 and seven assists for Cleveland, which held a 64-34 advantage on the glass and snapped a two-game slide. The rebounds were a season high. The Cavaliers also got a huge boost from rookie Anderson Varejao, who stepped in at power forward and scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter. He grabbed eight boards. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points and Stackhouse added 16 for Dallas (49-24), which began its winning streak with a 31-point rout of Cleveland eight days ago and completed a 3-1 road trip. "I was looking at one game (on the trip) and that was tonight," Terry said. "They came out and they had payback on their mind and they set the tone early." Playing every minute for the fourth time in nine games, James scored 15 points in the first quarter as Cleveland bolted to a 31-14 lead. A follow shot by Traylor made it 38-18 in the second quarter before the Cavaliers settled for a 42-30 halftime lead. "We needed one of these wins," James said. "We've just got to keep the momentum going. We kind of killed them with their own poison early in the game when we went up 20."
