Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- With their division title slipping away and their emotional leader injured on the bench, Ricky Davis and Paul Pierce stepped up when the Boston Celtics needed them the most. Davis scored 27 points and Pierce added 26, with each making big plays down the stretch, as the Celtics secured a crucial 103-97 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. "Ricky Davis really killed us in some stretches of the game tonight," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "He hit some big shots. He went through a stretch where he hit about four or five straight shots for them and really kept them in it." The Celtics (41-34) snapped a three-game home losing streak and lead Philadelphia by 3 1/2 games in the Atlantic Division. Boston visits late-charging New Jersey on Saturday before traveling to Philadelphia on Tuesday for a crucial matchup. "I didn't think we played great, but we did enough things to win the game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "It's amazing how many fourth quarters we come back in, I'd like not to have to but it's nice that our guys stayed in there and really just found a way." Boston played without Antoine Walker, the long-time Celtic who was re-acquired in February. The three-time All-Star has sparked the team to a 14-6 record since the trade but missed his third straight game with a bruised knee. "We needed to come out and get this win," Celtics rookie Al Jefferson said. "We got one last night. Especially with Antoine out, we're playing well without 'Toine. So when he comes back, we'll keep this ship rolling," Davis, one of the leading candidates for the Sixth Man Award, scored eight points in the final period, including two free throws with 22 seconds left to put Boston up, 99-94. Pierce, the Celtics' leading scorer, had 11 points in the fourth period, when he made 4-of-5 shots, including all three of his 3-pointers. "I'm getting in a nice rhythm out of my three-ball and it's really going for me as of late," Pierce said. "I'm just playing my game, pretty much. I'm using the things I've been doing for a number of years and it's translating into wins." "He was great. I mean, he was great," Rivers said. The Bucks, playing without leading scorer Michael Redd, led most of the first half and 65-54 with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter. Desmond Mason scored 23 points on 6-of-23 shooting and Dan Gadzuric added 17 points and 14 rebounds for Milwaukee (28-46), which suffered its 10th straight road loss and was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. "In the third quarter, we had some turnovers, which led to easy baskets for them in transition," said Mason, who scored 14 points in the final quarter. "We couldn't complete some plays in the second half. I missed a couple of shots, then they came down and knocked down some shots in the fourth." The Celtics made 5-of-8 3-pointers in the first half, which ended in a 47-47 tie. Davis scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
