Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Steve Francis and rookie Jameer Nelson blew several opportunities to win the game for the Orlando Magic. They do not have many chances left this season. Francis misfired on a pair of jumpers in the final 10 seconds of regulation and Nelson missed an off-balance 29-footer at the buzzer in overtime as the Orlando Magic saw their playoff hopes further damaged with a 102-101 loss to the Chicago Bulls. Kirk Hinrich scored 25 points and Tyson Chandler added 15 and 22 rebounds for the Bulls (42-32), who won for the 10th time in 11 games and moved a game ahead of Washington for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Hinrich made 10-of-23 shots after going 0-of-7 in a scoreless effort in a 104-86 setback at Miami on Tuesday. After Orlando's Kelvin Cato nailed a baseline jumper to tie the game at 101-101 with 43 seconds left in overtime, the center blocked a shot by Hinrich. But Francis airballed a floating shot over two defenders and the ball was tipped out of bounds by the Magic with 11 seconds left. Chicago rookie Ben Gordon was short on a teardrop jumper but teammate Antonio Davis grabbed the rebound, was fouled and split two free throws with 1.4 seconds left. Davis's first attempt rolled around the rim and bounced out before he swished his second shot. "It's a tough situation to be (in), especially after the guys fought so hard and it comes down to whether you're going to step up and relax and make the free throw," Davis said. "After missing the first one, you don't feel real good about it, but once again, you learn to relax, step up and shoot it the same way." After a timeout, the ball was inbounded to Nelson, whose long 3-pointer just before the buzzer was an airball. What impressed Davis is the way the Bulls display what is the Magic's team motto: "Total team effort." "I just love situations like this because we don't give up. We stick together," said Davis, who contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds. "Yes, we're going to make mistakes, but we are going to make them playing hard. We've done that all year. Hopefully, it'll carry over to the playoffs." Francis had 28 points and 11 assists for Orlando (35-40), which fell 2 1/2 games behind eighth-place Philadelphia in the East with seven games left. The Magic play six of their next seven games are against winning teams. They are just 1-14 against winning teams since February 1. "Coach (Chris Jent) told us to come in and play hard and don't think it's over," Francis said. "Regardless of the situation, what you saw tonight is what you're going to see the rest of the season, win or lose." The Magic tied the game at 95-95 on a dunk by rookie Dwight Howard with 50 seconds left before Hinrich missed a runner with 32 seconds to play. Francis missed a jumper and Chandler grabbed the rebound with 10 seconds left, but the Bulls elected not to call timeout. Jannero Pargo attempted a pass to rookie Chris Duhon under the hoop, but Howard stole it. After a timeout, the Magic inbounded the ball to Francis, but he missed a jumper over Pargo from near the right elbow as time expired. The Bulls again were without center Eddy Curry, who has an irregular heartbeat, and forward Othella Harrington, who is in Chicago with his pregnant wife. Rookie forward Luol Deng was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a torn ligament in his right wrist, and he will miss the rest of the regular season. "Coach (Scott Skiles) has said all year that it's not about the record and it's not about what we do," Chandler said. "'Get better as a team,' he said. That's the way it was when we were 0-9, and that's the way it is now."
