Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Although he missed 23 games with a foot injury, Pau Gasol appears to be fully ready for the stretch drive. Gasol scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds in three quarters to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to an easy 104-74 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Memphis (42-32) remained one game behind Denver for seventh place in the Western Conference and is 2 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Minnesota. "It was a game we needed to win," Gasol said. "It was a matter of bouncing back from last night. We're just trying to stay strong in this race. We've got a tough, tough schedule coming up." Memphis, which lost to Denver on Tuesday, faces Miami on Friday and has two games against both San Antonio and Dallas in the next two weeks. "This was a very important game after last night's tough loss," Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. "We have our work cut out for us here in the remaining games to try and qualify for the playoffs. So I was proud to see the way the players responded after a real difficult loss." The Grizzlies never trailed and broke open the contest when Bonzi Wells and Earl Watson scored all the points in a 14-0 second-quarter run for a 50-24 lead. Playing his ninth game since returning to the lineup March 20, Gasol has scored in double figures in his last five. He scored 14 points in the third quarter, including 12 in a row for Memphis, extending the advantage to 81-44. "I'm feeling good right now," Gasol said. "I and the team have to stay focused down the stretch." Wells scored 21 points and Shane Battier added 16 for the Grizzlies, who shot 55 percent (40-of-73) from the floor for their largest victory margin of the season. "We needed this game," Battier said. "To come in here and win by 30 when pretty much everyone in the NBA thought we were going to fall apart after losing to Denver, this is a huge win for us." Toronto suffered its worst loss of the season, set a season low in points, shot 35 percent (27-of-78) was outrebounded, 49-30. "When you can't score and you can't stop people, there's no way you can come back from something like that," Raptors guard Rafer Alston said. Memphis outscored Toronto, 28-13, in the second quarter for 60-32 halftime lead. Jalen Rose scored 19 points and Chris Bosh had 15 with 10 rebounds for the Raptors (30-44) who have dropped eight of 11 and are seven games behind Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the East. "Today was embarrassing, flat-out embarrassing," Rose said. "We didn't have any passion or energy," Toronto coach Sam Mitchell said. "It's like we were feeling sorry for ourselves and the league is going to feel sorry for us. They came out and jumped on and we didn't respond." Doynell Marshall, who made his second start of the season for the Raptors, left the game with 5:13 left in the second quarter with a strained right Achilles tendon and did not return.
