Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- After Jason Kidd buried the New York Knicks with shots, he buried them with words. Kidd recorded his 66th career triple-double and led the decisive late run as the Nets posted with a 110-98 victory over the Knicks, who have lost 15 of the last 18 regular-season games in the series. New Jersey has dominated the recent the series between the New York area rivals, sweeping the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs last season. After yet another victory over lottery-bound New York, Kidd denied feeling any sense of accomplishment. "Why would I be satisfied with beating New York?" he said. "We've done it 19 or 20 times now. They're behind us (in the standings). It's just another bad team. I don't get excited about beating bad teams." The harsh words may have stemmed from an altercation in the fourth quarter, when the usually mild-mannered Kidd lost his composure as the Knicks attempted a furious comeback. After New York sliced a 27-point deficit to 99-91, Jerome Williams set an illegal screen on Kidd, who shoved the Knicks forward to the floor and stood over him, drawing a technical foul at 5:27. "Is that how it happened?" Kidd said. "The refs explained it to me and they made a good call. It just got me jacked up." "I was just setting a pick and I was kind of falling backwards, and he just pushed me down," Williams said. Kidd then prevented coach Lawrence Frank from drawing another technical by keeping his coach from running on to the court to argue. "They were gonna give the tech to me and he took it for me," the diminutive Frank said. "He went to hold me back, because I'm a big, strong guy." Jamal Crawford sank the ensuing free throw to bring New York within 99-92, but Kidd refused to let New Jersey's local rival dampen its playoff hopes. "We kept our cool, nobody panicked," Kidd said. "They were making a run at us and we kept making plays. That is what good teams do." After the Nets kept possession with a pair of offensive rebounds, Kidd buried a jumper from left elbow as the shot clock expired. He then followed a Knicks turnover with a wide-open 3-pointer from the right corner, giving New Jersey a 104-92 cushion with 3:59 left. "They were giving us threes all night long and we took them," Kidd said. "If we can continue to have that confidence to take those shots, we can play with the best of them." "He's one of a kind," Frank said of Kidd. "Guys like him don't come around very often. We've seen it time and time again when he takes his game to another level." Kidd secured his triple-double at the other end, fielding an airball from Malik Rose, and New Jersey's Brian Scalabrine buried a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach. Kidd finished with a season high-tying 28 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for the Nets (37-39), who won for the 10th time in 13 games to pull within one game of idle Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Vince Carter added 32 points and Scalabrine finished with 12 for New Jersey, who shot 51 percent (43-of-85) from the floor and made 9-of-30 3-pointers. Stephon Marbury scored 21 of his 30 points in the final 15 minutes and Crawford had 26 points for the Knicks, who have lost a season-high eight straight games and seven in a row on the road. "We played well at the end of the second half," Marbury said. "We just have to put a string together throughout the whole game. We can't come out flat and expect to win." New York (29-45) will be eliminated from playoff contention with its next loss or a win by the 76ers. The Knicks opened a 13-5 lead on a jumper by Crawford midway through the first quarter as the Nets made only two of their first 13 shots. New Jersey responded with 14 straight points as New York missed eight straight shots and went scoreless for nearly five minutes. The Nets made 21 of their final 30 shots in the first half en route to a 57-37 bulge. They had their largest lead at 73-46 after Scalabrine made 1-of-2 free throws with 6:32 left in the third.
