Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons moved a step closer to winning the Central Division title. The Orlando Magic moved a step closer to missing the postseason. Chauncey Billups scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half as the Pistons extended their winning streak to five games with a 114-102 victory over the fading Magic. Sparked by their starting point guard, the Pistons (48-27) moved a season-high 21 games over .500. They have a five-game lead over Chicago with seven games left. After a quiet first half, Billups scored 11 points in the third quarter as the Pistons stretched a six-point halftime lead to 84-67 entering the final period. "I wanted to get going (after halftime)," Billups said. "Stevie (Francis) was out there being aggressive and I wasn't making him play any defense. I just wanted to start to get a little aggressive and make him defend. I got some good looks and knocked them down." Tayshaun Prince scored 26 points to lead six players in double figures for the Pistons, who shot 55 percent (44-of-77), including a blistering 68 percent (44-of-77) after intermission against the defensively challenged Magic. "In the first half we got a 13-14 point lead and we started trading baskets," said Prince, who also collected nine rebounds. "But in the third quarter we got our defense set, made them take touch shots and capitalized on the offensive end." Rasheed Wallace added 22 points and Richard Hamilton, Billups' starting backcourt mate, had an effective game, collecting 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. "For him to get 11 defensive rebounds against a good rebounding team, is tremendous," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "He just keeps getting better and better." "We had a lot of people going (offensively) tonight," Billups said. "They couldn't stop "Tay" (Tayshaun Prince) or "Sheed" (Rasheed Wallace) in the post and Rip (Hamilton) was making everything happen. It was a well-rounded game for us." Orlando surrendered at least 100 points for the eighth time in its last nine games. The Magic are 12-33 when allowing at least 100 points. "They proved that they're the championship team," said Magic guard Steve Francis, who scored 23 points and added nine assists. "They're big players made big shots. We didn't have an answer." "Nothing we did changed the way in which they approached the game," Magic interim coach Chris Jent said. "They're a 48-win team and they played like it." DeShawn Stevenson scored 25 points and rookie Dwight Howard collected 21 and 13 rebounds for Orlando (35-41), which fell 3 1/2 games behind Cleveland and Philadelphia for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth with six games left. The Magic have lost three straight and seven of their last 10 games. Earlier Friday, the Magic received some more bad news after placing Grant Hill on the injured list with a bruised shin. The oft-injured forward is not expected to play again this season. The Magic needed a special exemption to place a fourth player on the injured list. "We're undermanned," added Francis. "You can fight all you want but we've got key people out. To lose that many people, it's tough to win."
