Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- With the playoffs just around the corner, the Denver Nuggets are hitting on all cylinders. Carmelo Anthony scored 19 points to lead seven players in double figures as the Nuggets won their ninth straight contest, a 116-102 triumph over the New Orleans Hornets. The Nuggets (47-31) have won 14 of their last 15 games and are one-half game behind Houston for sixth place in the Western Conference. They still have an outside chance at winning the Northwest Division, trailing Seattle by three games with four to play. Wesley Person came off the bench to score eight of Denver's last 10 points in the opening quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the Nuggets a 36-23 lead. "It feels good to come out and hit shots like that," Person said. "Lately, I haven't given the team a spark and I've had to do other things like rebounding and playing good defense. I got off to a good start and the shots were dropping tonight." Anthony scored 15 points in the first half and Denver shot 67 percent (26-of-39) from the floor, closing with a 16-3 run to take a 67-42 advantage. "We came out sharp tonight," Anthony said. "But we didn't sustain it the whole game. A win is a win. The last couple games have been blowouts. But we aren't satisfied and we need to get the next wins against Memphis and on the road at Houston." Rookie J.R. Smith tried to bring the Hornets back, scoring 19 of his 25 points in the third quarter, including 10 in a row, to help cut the deficit to 91-77. But Nene scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a driving layup to help extend the margin to 105-82 with 5:58 left. "They are a good team," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "They have a good offense. But I worry about their defense in the playoffs. If they can continue to play well on offense and add in some good defense, they have a good shot at going far in the playoffs." Earl Boykins had 18 points and 11 assists and Person scored 17 points for the Nuggets, who completed a season sweep and are 30-6 since Karl became coach. Since the All-Star break, the Nuggets are 23-2, which is their best run since joining the league in 1976. The team won 27 of 29 in the ABA in 1974-75. "We think we're ready for the playoffs," Boykins said. "But we still want to improve. I've been relaxing out there and it has helped me come out of the little slump I was in. We are going to continue to go out and play hard and hopefully we can keep winning." Bostjan Nachbar scored 19 points and rookie Jackson Vroman added 16 and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who have lost five straight and fell to 7-32 on the road.
