Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets prevented the Memphis Grizzlies from clinching a playoff spot on their court. Yao collected 28 points and nine rebounds and McGrady added 23, eight and eight assists as the Rockets won their fourth straight game, a 100-92 triumph over the Grizzlies. Despite a career-high 37 points from Mike Miller, the Grizzlies (44-34) were unable to secure the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot. They have a three-game lead over ninth-place Minnesota (41-37) with four games remaining and hold the tiebreaker. Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said his team's playoff hopes were not affected by the loss. "I think when we lose any game, we're disappointed," Fratello said. "All it means is that we're going to have to go out there and try our best to win the next game so we can clinch it ourselves. We're not counting on Minnesota or anybody else to help us get in." Fratello added that poor ballhandling and clutch shooting by the Rockets down the stretch ultimately doomed his team. "We can't keep having turnovers and breakdowns on the defensive end like that," Fratello added. "We can't just smack people when they go by and get into foul trouble as early as we did tonight." Memphis, which trailed by 15 points with just under 5 1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter, pulled within 69-66 entering the fourth period and got within one point on three occasions, including 89-88 after a 3-pointer by James Posey with 1:52 remaining. But McGrady split a pair of free throws, Houston guard Mike James stole the ball from Memphis forward Pau Gasol and Yao converted a three-point play for a 93-88 edge with 1:09 to play. "They were trying to put two guys on Tracy all night, so of course I am going to get my chances," Yao said. "They can't put another guy to get the double-team on me, so Tracy just found me and I did my best to hit the open shots." After a dunk by Miller nine seconds later, James nailed a 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, and Memphis did not threaten thereafter. "(Scoring a career-high 37 points) doesn't mean anything because we still need to get one win and we didn't get it tonight," Miller said. "The bottom line is that we needed to make a run. My teammates did a good job of getting me the ball and I just tried to make something happen." Houston (48-31) moved within one-half game of idle Sacramento for fifth place in the West. "I thought the execution of both teams over the last four or five minutes was at a very high level," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "I thought both teams acquitted themselves in a very hard-fought game." "You have to be in the right frame of mind if you want to win," McGrady added. "We're just trying to gain confidence and get into a great rhythm. We have three more games on our home court and we need to build up our momentum heading into the playoffs." Pau Gasol contributed 20 points and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, who attempted just 14 free throws, making 10. The Rockets went 26-of-33 from the line.
