Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- With nothing to play for, the Portland Trail Blazers and Golden State Warriors let it fly. Damon Stoudamire set an NBA record with 21 3-point attempts in the Trail Blazers' 108-88 loss to the Warriors. Stoudamire went 5-of-21 from the arc. The previous record of 20 attempts was set by Michael Adams of Denver in 1991 and matched five years later by George McCloud of Dallas. "I wasn't even thinking about it," Stoudamire said. "That probably comes from being in the game the whole time. We had a shortage of players so I just played the most minutes more than anything." With Stoudamire heaving away, the teams also combined for an NBA-record 69 3-point attempts, making 23. The previous record of 67 was set on April 8 between Golden State and Phoenix. Portland shot a franchise-record 37 3-pointers, making 11. Golden State went 12-of-32 from the arc. "We weren't looking to shoot 37," Blazers interim coach Kevin Pritchard said. "I don't think we had many bad shots. It just happened that way. Sometimes that happens. (If) you get Damon 21 good looks at open threes, he's going to knock down half of them in a normal game. It just didn't happen tonight." "We won, we really don't care how we win as long as we get the W," said Warriors forward Mike Dunleavy Jr., who scored 20 points. "If that means we've got to shoot a lot of threes or our opponent shoots a lot. As long as we come out on top we don't care what the stats are." Warriors coach Mike Montgomery praised Dunleavy. "Mike Dunleavy played real well, he had 20 points and eight assists and was able to make some threes," Montgomery said. "He understands the game and works hard. When we shoot, he really tries to concentrate and knock down each shot." Overshadowed in all the long-range shooting was Stoudamire recording a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. The point guard shot 6-of-25 from the floor. "Sometimes you get them when you're out there grinding and working really hard," said Stoudamire, who registered his second triple-double of the season. "Sometimes in the nature of the game the ball is just going to start bouncing your way." Baron Davis had 19 points and 11 assists and Troy Murphy added 18 and 12 rebounds for the Warriors, who opened an 87-70 lead after three quarters. The Warriors reached the 100 point-plateau for the 12th straight game, their longest such streak since March 1995. Ruben Patterson and Shareef Abdur-Rahim each added 17 points for the Blazers (25-54), who are tied with Utah for last place in the Northwest Division. Portland has not finished last since the 1975-76 season, the year before it won its only NBA title.
