Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jim Jackson found the range and the Los Angeles Clippers lost their bearings. Jackson sank two clutch 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lift the Phoenix Suns to a 98-91 victory over the Clippers, who made a handful of mistakes down the stretch. Amare Stoudemire had 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Suns (60-19), who moved two games ahead of San Antonio in the race for the NBA's best record and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Suns have won 60 games for just the second time in team history. In the 1992-93 season, they won 62 games and reached the NBA Finals. "I haven't reached 60 wins if you added all my three years in the league," Suns swingman Joe Johnson said. "It is great experience and we had a lot of fun and success and hopefully we will keep running." Normally a reserve, Jackson started for NBA 3-pointers leader Quentin Richardson, who sat out with a sprained ankle. He was not a factor through three quarters, missing his first seven shots. The Suns trailed, 85-83, when Jackson finally connected on a 3-pointer with 7:08 left. Shawn Marion added a 3-pointer 31 seconds later. "I had some good shots early but I was off-balance," Jackson said. "I have the confidence that you always say the next one is going to go in. If you don't make it, then it is the next one that is going in. You don't ever think that the next one you are going to shoot you are going to miss. Also, my teammates had confidence in me. Even though I missed my first seven shots, they still swung it around to me." The Clippers tied it twice, the last time at 91-91 on a reverse layup by Chris Kaman with 4:28 to go. But they did not score again, committing all sorts of foot faults down the stretch. Jackson's second 3-pointer gave Phoenix the lead for good at 94-91 with 2:59 to play. It was the last basket of the game as the teams traded empty possessions. With 1:01 to go, Clippers rookie Shaun Livingston slid out of bounds before delivering a pass to an open Kaman. With 22 seconds left, Marko Jaric tried to tie the game but stepped on the 3-point line while firing an airball. After Steve Nash made two free throws, Bobby Simmons stepped out of bounds while setting up for a 3-pointer. "Some of our turnovers weren't forced. We must of stepped out of bounds five times, and that hurt us," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I thought our guys played hard and did a lot of really good things out there, but ultimately 20 offensive rebounds which we gave was the difference." Marion had 20 points and 10 boards, Joe Johnson scored 20 points and Nash added 14 and 11 assists for the Suns, who swept the four-game season series. Jackson scored eight points - all in the fourth quarter - on 2-of-12 shooting. Elton Brand scored 22 points and Kaman added 21 for the Clippers, who limited the Suns to 38 percent (34-of-90) from the field but surrendered 20 second-chance points. "It is kind of disheartening because we have been playing very well at the end of games and finishing out of games," Brand said. "Their defense turned up at the end. They have 60 wins now, that's just not for nothing.
