Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- LeBron James continues to put up big numbers, but the Cleveland Cavaliers continue to come up short where it matters most. James scored 38 points but again received little help from his teammates in a critical 119-111 loss to the Washington Wizards, who got big games from the backcourt tandem of Gilbert Arenas and Larry Hughes. Despite the 20-year-old James trying to carry his team to the postseason with big games on a nightly basis, the Cavaliers (40-39) lost for the fifth time in seven games and had their lead for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot reduced to one game over New Jersey. New Jersey owns the tiebreaker over Cleveland, which plays two of its last three games on the road. The Cavaliers have not made the playoffs since 1998. "It's frustrating, but we put ourself in this position, so we have to win 'em," James said. Playing all 48 minutes for the third time in the last five games, James made 16-of-33 shots, adding six rebounds and six assists. In the last five games, James has taken 137 shots and been on the court for all but six minutes. "Me, I'm never fatigued. I'm fine," James said. "I can play a full game every night." Cleveland's other four starters scored a combined 36 points. "He played a great game tonight and we need it from him - we needed every bit, and probably a little bit more," said Drew Gooden, who scored 13 points on 4-for-16 shooting. "We've just got to focus," said Cavaliers forward Robert Traylor, who contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds. "We have some guys who can score the basketball, they just had off nights." While James got no help, Arenas and Hughes - the NBA's highest-scoring backcourt - had their way with the Cavaliers' porous defense. "I'm definitely impressed," Hughes said of James. "I told him he's leading the league in minutes played. That's definitely hard. You have some success with it, especially early on in the season, but you can't win consistently like that. They have to have other guys step up and be a threat and take some pressure off of him. You can only do it for so long and you can only do it so well. "He's getting better and he's going to get a lot better. He'll probably get some guys in there that are aggressive as he is in the next coming years. He definitely needs some help. You can't go compete as one against three guys. Tonight he had to compete one against three. He had 40 but we had 80, so, you know, he can't win." Arenas scored 33 points and Hughes added 31 for Washington (44-35), which clinched its first playoff berth since 1997 on Wednesday. The Wizards trail Chicago by one game for fourth place and home-court advantage in the first round. "Those three guys (Arenas, Hughes, Antawn Jamison) can score 20 every night, so that's 70 points between them almost every night," James said. "Tonight they had 80 points, so it's tough." A 3-pointer by Sasha Pavlovic with 7:19 remaining pulled the Cavaliers within 95-92. But Hughes answered with a 3-pointer and jumper, rebuilding the lead to eight with 6:06 remaining. Washington led by at least six points thereafter. Washington coach Eddie Jordan was ejected with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter after picking up two technical fouls. Jamison added 21 points for the Wizards, who shot 59 percent (46-of-78).
