Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Mike Bibby and Cuttino Mobley helped the Sacramento Kings pick up a key victory, which may have come at a big price. Bibby scored 26 points and Mobley collected 23 and 10 assists as the Kings posted a 115-106 victory over their once-bitter rivals, the Los Angels Lakers. Sacramento (49-30) remained fifth in the Western Conference, one game ahead of Houston and Denver, who are both 48-31 and play Saturday at Houston. "I don't think it matters who we play," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "We just have to win. If we win we're going to get what ever the high seed we get." Kings leading scorer Peja Stojakovic scored 14 points before leaving with 4:22 remaining in the first period when he strained his left groin. He did not return and his status for Saturday's game at Phoenix is uncertain. "It's tough with Peja not out there," Bibby said. "Peja opens up a lot for everybody else. When he's out everyone steps their game up." "I don't know what it is," Adelman said. "I know they said that it was a pull. They said it was mild. I don't know what that means so we'll just have to wait and see." Kobe Bryant missed the game for Los Angeles to be with his wife, who is ill. Without Stojakovic, Sacramento still led comfortably after Bibby's jumper made it 94-78 with just over a minute left in the third period. "We were a little more aggressive," Bibby said. "I'm not always looking to score, I'm looking to pass just as much. I just go out and take what they give me." Caron Butler triggered a rally by scoring six of his season-high 34 points during a 13-2 burst that trimmed Sacramento's advantage to 96-91 with 9:12 remaining. The Lakers kept the game close until reserve forward Corliss Williamson connected on a three-point play with just under three minutes to go that built a 107-99 lead for the Kings, who were not threatened thereafter. "We just fell a little short," Butler said. "We played with passion and had a great effort. We're not into moral victories right now. We want to win games and to fall a little short like this was devastating." Lakers guard Luke Walton scored 10 points and collected career highs with 12 rebounds and nine assists. In the final 30 seconds of the game, Los Angeles interim coach Frank Hamblin called at least two timeouts to set up plays for Walton to get his 10th assist. "They told me I was one assist away," Walton said. "It wasn't during the game. We were just trying to win the game. At the end, when we were down with 20 seconds to play I threw it to Dev (Devean George) trying to get it, but during the game I wasn't really worried."
