Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks narrowly avoided a disastrous meltdown and managed to continue an impressive winning streak. Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points and Jason Terry added 17 and 10 assists as the Mavericks posted their seventh consecutive win, a 114-112 victory over the lottery-bound Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks (56-24) held an 85-70 lead after three periods that was whittled to 103-95 on Kobe Bryant's 3-pointer with 3:30 remaining before Terry sank a 3-pointer. "The Lakers weren't going to throw the towel in by any means in their last home game of the season," Terry said. "They are an example of their leader, Kobe Bryant. He's not ever going to give up." The Lakers (34-46) continued to chip away, slicing the deficit to 108-102 on two free throws by Bryant with 1:07 to go. Nowitzki and Lakers guard Jumaine Jones became entangled following a missed 3-pointer by Jones with 36 seconds left. Both players received technical fouls, and the Lakers closed to 113-107 on a 3-pointer by rookie Sasha Vujacic. "I thought I had to protect the ball," Nowitzki said. "They were hacking me on the rebound situation and I hit him. It's a play that happens every other game, so we shouldn't even be talking about it." After Dallas' Darrell Armstrong missed two free throws, Devean George brought the Lakers within 113-110 on a 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining. Jerry Stackhouse split two free throws, but Nowitzki inexcusably fouled Bryant on a 3-pointer with one second left. Bryant made the first two before intentionally missing the third, but the Lakers could not corral the rebound. "The defense was good up until the fourth quarter in the game that I was watching," Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said. "We got off to a bad start a little bit, but from the middle of the first quarter to the middle of the fourth quarter we thought our defense was pretty good. They made a lot of big-time threes at the end of the game which we didn't guard very well." "All we are doing is trying to keep winning," Stackhouse said. "We've got two more games until the playoffs. We've been looking for a winning streak like this all year. We haven't been able to put one together, but we feel the good teams always put together a seven- or eight-game winning streak, and we finally got ours." Michael Finley scored 20 points and Stackhouse added 15 for Dallas, which is locked into the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Bryant scored 33 points and Jones added 14 for the Lakers, who have lost four straight games and are going to miss the playoffs for the first time since 1994. "A lot of us aren't really used to this," George said. "This is something new to us. We all need to get on the same page. The whole season we stayed unbalanced. Whether it was coaching, lineups, chemistry of players, or what offense we were running, we never really got into a groove." "We need to be a better defensive team," Bryant said. "We will work out, get conditioned, get healthy and be ready for a better season next year. We have to be able to hold teams down and have consistency all year long, which was tough this year with such a roller-coaster season." As for the Mavericks, the future is now. "I think the vision is that there is a championship at the end of the railroad," Terry said. "We feel that we're a team that is capable of winning it all. And if we do the right things, play within our system and play consistent defense every night then we are going to be right there at the end of the season."
