Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Ruben Patterson scored 23 points and Damon Stoudamire was one rebound away from his second consecutive triple-double as the Portland Trail Blazers rolled to a 100-82 victory over the Utah Jazz. The Trail Blazers took control of the contest in the second quarter, when they reeled off a 20-2 burst a that opened a 54-34 lead with 2:26 remaining in the half. Stoudamire connected on three 3-pointers and scored 11 points during the surge. "I'm excited about the win," said Trail Blazers interim coach Kevin Pritchard, whose team won for just the fourth time in 25 games with him at the helm. "We played the right way from the get-go. When you have 29 assists and only nine turnovers you know you've played the right way." "It's very disheartening," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We play all these games and we didn't have any idea what or where we were supposed to be tonight. We're easy to guard when we're just running around with no clue on what we're doing or what we're supposed to do." Stoudamire collected 18 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. He recorded his second triple-double of the season at Golden State on Friday. "I think this was Damon's best game," Pritchard said. "I knew he needed just a rebound for another triple-double but I think he would tell you that this one was better than the other night because we won the game and Damon is about winning." Utah scored seven straight points, including the first basket of the second half to make it 54-41. Patterson responded with 12 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach and help the Blazers snap their six-game home losing streak. "We know we aren't going to the playoffs, so we said in the locker room we're just going to go out there and get a win," Patterson said. "I was out there tonight having a good time playing." Mehmet Okur and rookie Kirk Snyder scored 15 points apiece for the Jazz. "I can't tell you how frustrating it is," Jazz forward Matt Harpring said. "It's game 80 and it's hard to get five guys to play as a team. I've yet to see a team go to the playoffs that doesn't play like a team." Harpring finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds but shot just 2-of-11 from the floor. "When they went on that run, we couldn't stop them," he added. "On the road in the NBA teams are gonna make runs and momentum will shift. The good teams learn how to stop those runs before they get down by 20." The last of Stoudamire's 3-pointers in the decisive run broke the team's single-season record of 178, set by Clifford Robinson in the 1995-96 season. "It's cool I guess," Stoudamire said. "It's a highlight in a season where there hasn't been too many highlights. I think everybody collectively can take part in that cause you can't make a 3-pointer without someone setting a screen or passing you the ball."
