Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Anthony Carter sparked the Minnesota Timberwolves to a victory one night too late. Carter converted the go-ahead layup with 29 seconds remaining, lifting the Timberwolves to a 102-99 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. The victory came one night after Minnesota (43-38) was eliminated from the Western Conference playoff race with a 109-94 home loss to Seattle. The Timberwolves last missed the playoffs in Kevin Garnett's rookie year in 1996. Carter scored eight points, none bigger than his late driving layup that gave Minnesota a 100-99 lead. Ndudi Ebi capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds left. Minnesota, which made the Western Conference finals last season, trailed 99-95 with 1:53 remaining before closing the game with a 7-0 run. Eddie Griffin hit a pair of free throws and Carter split two free throws to pull Minnesota within 99-98 with 54 seconds left. Wally Szczerbiak, who scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, set up Carter's layup with a steal off a pass by Dan Dickau. Sam Cassell scored 16 points and Garnett added 14 for Minnesota. Casey Jacobsen scored 15 points and Bostjan Nachbar added 14 off the bench for New Orleans (18-63) which has lost nine straight home games and eight in a row overall.
